I’ll start off with a Delectable Community note: Where’s our friend @"Odedi"??
Now to the wine. This cuvée is always a dependably good and typical Valpo. For decades and decades. Bright almond-inflected cherry, a bit of warm gravel. Medium bodied, lively, tangy, and fruity on the palate. A welcome and subtle bitter note on the finish. Soft and gulpable. — 3 years ago

2016- Real de Asua - CVNE. Stored at 55 degrees for six months, decanted for one hour, and served at 65 degrees. I do prefer 62 but I missed the mark. Ha ha. The bouquet is a perfume of lavender and vanilla. The palate begins with a smooth silky raspberry delight. It is very light on the tongue, yet opaque in the glass. The legs last forever! The palate develops into a tart, earthy, and smokey finish that drys out the lips and tongue. There is an after taste of graphite and slate as the lips begin to pucker!! Over-the-top with fruit. Where’s the rest? — 3 years ago
Another wine of interest to me in the Bordeaux masterclass although it looks nothing like the critics’ notes online. Where’s all the floral and mineralic notes? Perhaps shut down at this stage? The nose itself was still interesting though - fruit-dense with lots of irony elements (rust, meat). Sweet fruited, spicy, and concentrated on the palate, but still energetic courtesy of a little more obvious acidity here. Tannins were dusty, fine, and directional. Blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot.

Where’s the love emojus when you need it? — 5 years ago
J’adore. At peak. Incredible nose of cherries, mocha, graphite, and earth. The same echoes on the palate. The freshness is truly remarkable, hardly any bricking with a deep core. No decanting needed but better after 20 minutes in the glass. Where’s the duck breast? — 6 years ago

A good, solid California Cab but what’s all the fuss about? I’m seeing ratings of 98, 99, even 100 from JS. Really? No way. This is a clear case of praise crossing over into hype. Granted, still a bit young and not at its peak but after five years in the bottle and an hour of decanting it needs to be more than just fine if it wants to justify stratospheric scores. This wine compares unfavorably to Ridge Monte Bello, Stags Leap Cask 23 and other peers. It lacked sophistication and poise—where’s the promised minerality, graphite, cedar shavings, oak, leather, blackcurrant, cherry, and complex balance of fine grained tannins, fruit, acid and alcohol? Where? We chose this wine for a birthday dinner at Lawry’s Prime Rib in Beverly Hills. Not a disaster but a disappointment given our high expectations (and the high price).
