Natura Un-Oaked Valle de Casablanca Chardonnay 2023

Un-oaked Chardonnay gives a different flavor to your typical Chardonnay. Fruit forward. Stone fruits like apple and pear. Medium acidity. — a month ago

Un Instant Sur Terre Alsace Pinot Gris Gewürztraminer 2020

9.2

This was served during my annual WWC hosting. Typical format of sparkler, three whites, four reds, one dessert, all served blind.

Marcel Deiss’s son is the winemaker. 50 Pinot Gris/40 Gewurtztraminer/ 10 Riesling. 100% whole cluster pressed for the Riesling and Gewurtztraminer, partially de-stemmed Pinot Gris. Macerated for 9 months in different amphorae.

I don’t know how you attach a score to this. Undoubtedly an orange wine, which I normally don’t drink. In color, it’s almost a pink tinge of orange. Aromatically, this could be Alsatian Muscat. Incredibly floral with a perception of sweetness. Strawberries romanoff, kiwi, orange blossom up front but the fruit fades to a more mineral/less sweet profile with great acidity. Very unique and worth seeking out more.

Where all did you visit while in Alsace? It will be my first time to the region. I’m the cellar master for the Confrerie St Etienne, which is an Alsatian wine society with chapters across the world. We’ve got visits with Trimbach, Weinbach, Paul Blanck, Hugel, Gustave Lorentz, and 1-2 others. Looking forward to it!

We only spent a quick few days in Alsace before heading to our primary destination, Annecy in the Haute Savoie. We originally planned to go in May 22, but had to push to early Sep for family reasons, which killed the winery visits due to Harvest. We only went to Dom Marcel Deiss in Bergheim. We chose to enjoy wine in the Cafes rather than do the commercial tasting room visits at the big houses like Trimbach. Wistub du Sommelier in Bergheim was a favorite (2002 Trimbach Frederic Emile BTG from a freshly opened bottle when we were there), although I was sad to see it listed as 'permanently closed' when I checked Google a few moments ago. We had a great meal and wines at the 1-strar La Table du Gourmet in Riquewihr. Anne Humbrecht is the Somm and did a great job. We stayed at a rental owned by the Chef, Jean Luc Brendel, just outside the city gates and adjacent to the farm/gardens used for his restaurant. I can be much more helpful with recommendations for Savoie visits, if you ever end up going there. A few stories (and more to come) on our IG page (@steveandmisuk) from trips in May 23 and Sep 22. Cheers and have fun!

…and, other than Marcel Deiss (and Vignoble du Reveur, if possible), you are hitting the A-list of Alsace wineries!

Un Jour de 1911 Brut Champagne Pinot Noir

Seriously special stuff going on here. Quite the aesthetically pleasing package. Old gold in the glass with persistent effervescence. A hefty dose of reserve wines make all the difference in the world here. The nose is extraordinary. Fun and complexity for days. Aged cheese, dried cherries, and oak. Apples drizzled with honey and a side of fragrant herbs. Intense and lovely.

100% Grand Cru Pinot Noir from Bouzy. Aged on lees for almost thirteen years and you can tell. Mature and focused. Regal and distinctive. This is a big, majestic champagne in nature. Oak and smoke mingle with red apples and spice. Hot buttered bread and honey with cherries and a touch of menthol. The finish is marvelously long and smooth. A gem of a wine.

Assemblage "Dans un Premier Temps..." Extra Brut Champagne

9.1

Base champagne of Dhondt Grellet. I get a beautiful balanced nose suggesting a very high end champagne. On the palate I get that vinous quality of still wine popping through. Brioche, yeasty, bread. The bubbles are a bit course and edging towards harshness and that brings me to the rest of the palate where there is plenty acidity but also a bit thin.

A base champagne that is definitely punching above it's weight!

2019 base vintage.
