Bandol Rosé Blend 2019

Nose of black cherry, honeydew, and smoke(?!). Good black cherry fruit on the palate with medium acidity and lots of minerally bitterness. Typical provençal rose structure and weight with a kick of black cherry. — 5 years ago

Napa Valley Malbec 2016

Charles still makes my favorite new world Malbec. Ten years old the better. But, the drink nicely young. Just lush, ruby, rich and elegant on the palate. Blackberries, black raspberries, glorious raspberries, dark cherries, some strawberries. Both light and dark colas/licorice. Dry brush, dark chocolate, rich dark soil, medium baking spices, caramel, some pepper, violets for days, great acidity and a very well balanced, polished finish that lasts minutes. — 2 years ago

@David T David, do you prefer Cahors Malbec over Argentinian Malbec?

Like them all if it is the right producer. It really boils down to just being different styles, mood, pairing and aging. This drinks really well young. The others not necessarily so. Just different experiences but all good.

Coravined bottle from mid week.

The 2012 is still a little early for me but, drinking beautifully.

The nose reveals; ripe, slightly dried fruits of; blackberries, black raspberries, dried dark cherries & cranberries, both plums, poached strawberries with some raspberries & blackberries. Radiant, dark spices, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, limestone minerals, dry crushed rocks, dark colas, steeped tea, black & red licorice, moist & drier clay, rich, forest floor with dry leaves, some dry herb, soft, understated eucalyptus, lightly, grilled meats, dry tobacco, well, used leather with ruby, candied, fresh & withering floral that are; dark, red, blue & purple.

The body is medium full, round, lush with dusty, light tannin presence with excellent viscosity. ripe, slightly dried fruits of; blackberries, black raspberries, dried dark cherries & cranberries, both plums, poached strawberries with some raspberries & blackberries. Radiant, dark spices, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, limestone minerals, dry crushed rocks, dry top soil, dry stems, dark, berry colas, steeped tea, black & red licorice, moist & drier clay, dark, rich, forest floor with dry leaves, some dry herb, soft, understated eucalyptus, mint notes, lightly, dark, Asian & Indian spices with heat, grilled meats, dry, used, pipe tobacco, well, used leather with ruby, candied, fresh & withering floral that are; dark, red, blue & purple. The round, lush acidity is like a cool stream in Spring. The long, steady, rich, elegant, well knitted & balanced finish loads as ripe, juicy fruits falling onto to spice & earth persisting several minutes.

Shows all the beauty of the vintage & still has 8-12 years of good drinking ahead.

Cheeses; Jasper Hill Alpha Tolman & Willoughby, Mimolette. Dried Turkish Apricots, Cashews & Columbus Italian Dry Salami. Otherwise, tonight’s dinner.

@Eric WS is but, they take time. They aren’t this good young. It is just now the 12 is beginning to shine. Young, I get why their professional critical scores are low.

Château La Roque

Cupa Numisma Pic Saint Loup Red Blend 2019

Yes, to early-evening sunshine after being cooped up inside all day!! And, yes, to savoring a glass of delicious wine while we’re at it!!!

This wine is 60% Syrah, 40% Mourvèdre, hailing from the Pic Saint Loup appellation in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France. It was produced by Château La Roque, which is certified biodynamic and practices low-intervention winemaking.

It offers a medium purple hue with medium (+) intensity of youthful aromas reminiscent of black cherry compote, blackberry sauce, ripe plum, also licorice, anise, peppercorn, nutmeg, tobacco, leather, peat, and cured meat (not tied to bottle aging).

This wine is dry with medium acidity, high alcohol (14.2%), a medium (+) body, medium (+) and grippy tannins, and medium (+) intensity in flavors consistent with the nose, but the pepper is more present on the palate than on the nose. The finish is medium (+).

This wine has balance, a strong structure, and great concentration of aromas and flavors. It’s beautiful.

We have tasted and loved many wines coming from this appellation (and the Languedoc-Roussillon region) lately. It's a region undoubtedly worth exploring.

Château La Roque

Les Traverses de la Roque Pic Saint Loup Languedoc Red Blend 2018

Organic and biodynamic wine. The nose is showing Grenadine, a bit of an irony thing (could it be brets?), cherry, blackberry and bit of heat. There is a floral thing too, violet and a bit of licorice too. The palate is rather smooth with a strong acid backbone, cherry and that Grenadine thing all around, not much weight but a nice width, a good grip, some drying tannins in mid palate and cherry, Grenadine and a bit of black pepper in the end. This is likely too young but pairs well with a roasted lamb leg. — 5 years ago
