Gianfranco Fino

'Es' Primitivo di Manduria

Served double-blind. First impression: “What the hell is this?!” Umami, German chocolate cake, flower shop…opulent in ever sense of the word. Dark fruit for dayzzz…with a sort of raisinated character that slips in at the finish. Remarkable depth. There’s also a black pepper thing on the very back end. Hefty structure with rather remarkable acid considering how bulky this wine is and, to be frank, rather necessary considering the 16% abv. Finish is sooooo long. I figured some sort of Valpolicella Ripasso or even an Amarone (neither are wines I drink a whole lot of but seem to fit the profile) and obviously from a good producer. When this was revealed, I can’t say I was shocked only because the Primitivo di Manduria also fits the description. That being said, this was my first experience with Gianfranco Fino’s wines and it was certainly a hedonistic treat. — 17 hours ago

Quattordice Primitivo

Schwerer trockener Rotwein

Am ersten Tag sehr fruchtig,

Am 2. Tag holzig, aber nicht schwer wie ein Barrique, sondern leichtes, frisches Holz, wie wenn man durch ein Sägewerk läuft.

Antica Masseria Jorche

Riserva Primitivo di Manduria 2016

Whoaaaa it’s a heady wine! Way complex, way deep thought-inducing but texturally it is more supple than one would imagine. Everything from seabreeze, licorice and roses on the nose give way to red cherries and white pepper on the palate. Bright with a tender bite. — 18 days ago

Stilio Primitivo di Manduria 2019

This medium-dark wine has a nose of smoke, earth and pepper, on top of brambly red fruit. The palate is savory and supple, with red currant, coffee notes and a raspberry tartness. There is also a mocha sense which comes through after a bit of time in the glass. The finish is quite lengthy, and quite a joy to savor. — 19 days ago

Tenuta Giustini

Acinore Primitivo di Manduria 2019

This wine’s nose is a perfumed dream, all dark red fruit with a gorgeous layer of spice and herbs. After being open for awhile, smoke really takes over. The palate brings black cherry to the forefront on a wave of sage and a refreshing acidity. Pair it with some meatballs, now. — 19 days ago

Azienda Agricola Petrera Pasquale

Riserva Fatalone Gioia del Colle Primitivo 2017

This needs time. Plenty of time. I decanted 3 hours, then drank it over days and still quite tannic and lots of acidity. Closed at first, but the nose is opening with inky ripe blackberry, black currants, little bit of vanilla, and a touch of menthol. The palate is more tart currant and blackberry pits with menthol and tree bark. For the price I’d buy a few, start drinking in 3-5 years+, then have each year thereafter. — 11 days ago
