This is one of five bottles at a recent tasting. This was not the youngest. However, I was quite taken back by how wonderfully it’s still drank - a 21-year-old Malbec. I can’t tell you about the berries and the fruits and any of the other 175 taste descriptions. all I know is the tannins and fruits were in very good balance after all these years.  — 18 days ago

The 2004 Léoville-Poyferré has a light and airy bouquet with blackberry, antique bureau, forest floor and light fungal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannins, a little austere but balanced, though I notice some attenuation and bitterness towards the finish. So-so for this estate. Tasted at the Léoville-Poyferré vertical at the château with Sara Lecompte Cuvelier. (Neal Martin, Vinous, September 2022)

2019 vintage. A strong effort for this estate, bought in 2008 by the Cuvelier family (Clos Fourtet, Grandes Murailles, Côte Baleau). Much more intensity and complexity compared to the 2015 tasted alongside (but maybe I should try another bottle of the 2015). Cassis, flowers and lead pencil. Medium-bodied, juicy and fresh with very good mineral length. — 5 years ago

I’ve started seeing quite a bit of this winery on Delectable as of late, and @Jason Oliver does a great job of being an ambassador for them. He informed me of a killer deal they had going, so I snagged a 3-pack.

Robbie Meyer (of Del Dotto, Pierson Meyer) became the full time winemaker in 2015. The Spur is their red blend and really is an awesome value for Livermore Valley. Bordeaux varietals + petite sirah. Super dark in the glass. Nose is full of herbs, crushed blackberries, graphite. I thought it would be super heavy on the palate due to the color, but it was soft. Easy to pick up the petite sirah in this with the spice and pepper on the finish. Tart and spicy fruit too like rhubarb. Smokiness and cedar wood. Looking forward to the merlot and Malbec I have. — 9 years ago

2020. The Pierson Meyer Sonoma Chardonnays I’ve loved have all had several years of age on them, so this recent release has a little different balance of oak, fruit, and acidity. The more of everything currently showing this wine probably helped it pair well with a curried squash soup. — 3 years ago

This estate was bought in 2013 by the Cuvelier family (Clos Fourtet and Poujeaux), but the previous owner Sophie Fourcade already made great efforts to improve the wines. This 2018 features a deep red colour, a flamboyant perfume with truffle, red fruit and flowers. Concentrated, with layers of red fruit and spices and a serious tannic structure. Good length too. As this estate (promoted to Grand Cru Classé in the 2012 classification) is still very much under the radar it is great value and worth seeking out for less than 25 euros. — 5 years ago

The 2005 Clos Fourtet is a dramatic, sweeping Saint-Émilion endowed with tremendous depth and unctuous intensity. Dark cherry, plum, cedar, tobacco and woodsmoke build as this rapturous, deeply textured wine shows off its allure. Silky, plush and wonderfully expressive, Clos Fourtet is fabulous in 2005. Bright saline notes, that are such a signature of Saint-Émilion's plateau, balance all of the natural richness of the year. Readers lucky enough to own it can look forward to another several decades of exceptional drinking. This is a superb effort from the Cuvelier family. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, April 2021)

As I sat in @Joan Pierson kitchen a shell of my former self thanks to an aggressive tasting the night before, I shakingly held the glass to my nose and was rewarded immediately with cola, coffee and chocolate. Some red fruit especially cherries crawling behind, struggling to catch up similar to myself at this tasting. A high character wine for my low character self as I threw up the white flag and slunk back to my bed. — 8 years ago
