Dark plum, tobacco and other deep@fruit flavors rounded out with medium level tannins that make this more Sangiovese like than zin. — 8 months ago
Tonight, we’re sipping a special wine we picked up while visiting Merry Edwards Winery in Sonoma County, California back in 2021.
It’s the Merry Edwards Russian River Valley ‘Cuvée Charles Li’ Pinot Noir, named in celebration of Charles Li Miller’s birth in 2017, the second grandchild of this estate’s illustrious and trailblazing founder, Merry Edwards.
The beautiful and vibrant label art commemorates the Year of the Fire Rooster (2017) honoring Charles and his mother’s Shanghainese heritage.
This wine is structured and powerful from the first glance with a deep ruby hue. It offers concentrated black cherry, boysenberry, kirsch, blueberry compote, and pomegranate notes alongside violet, licorice, anise, clove, rooibos tea, damp earth, and mushroom notes. The alcohol is high (14.5% ABV) but equally matched by the intensity of aromas and flavors with a fresh acidity adding lift on the palate.
In sum: it’s delicious, complex, and age-worthy.

The impossible to pronounce 2013 He-Li-An-Thus, coming from purchased grapes, is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 18% Petit Verdot and the rest Cabernet Franc, bottled unfined and unfiltered. Aged in Darnajou oak, this is an elegant wine, but it has serious intensity, a blue/purple color, sweet black raspberry and blueberry fruit, some forest floor and spring flowers. It is my favorite of the three vintages to date … — 7 months ago

2014 Reserve Merlot. Cutchogue NY. Dense and balanced. 2014 was a standout year for LI merlot and this puts an exclamation point on it. Fresh black berries, a hint of mint, and a slightly herbal finish. Well balanced and aging beautifully. Pretty close to it’s peak. — a month ago
