Calera Selection Doc's Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018

9.4

93-94

One of the few domestic Pinot producers I really enjoy. Close proximity to the coast and whole cluster use normally gets me intrigued, especially when you see ABVs in the 12-13 range.

Pop and poured for a quarterly wine dinner. Theme was domestic Pinot and Sauvignon Blanc (I also opened a 2023 Mowe SB…lights out good). 13.6ABV. Winner of the night was a 2000 Marcassin.

Translucent red/purple in the glass. Gorgeous and fragrant…lovely floral notes on the nose (potpourri spice, violets). The palate sports crunchy red and black berry fruits, herbs/green and spice from the whole cluster use…some mint and black tea too. Bright and nervy acidity with nice mid-palate depth (can be tough to do at lower ABVs). Followed over two days and held strong. Lovely.

Compared to the ‘17 Doc’s Swan & Calera, this showed a touch more weight and power with a little less complexity at the finish. Very much enjoyed both for different reasons.

This is their “Draft” - delicious, Virginia has a bunch of cideries and they’re really coming into their own. This was creamy and pure, not at all too sweet, fresh crisp acidity, and a clean finish. This had no sour or tart edges and on the lower side of carbonation - quite enjoyable — 3 years ago

Asti Spumante Moscato

My original sparkling wine love!!! 20-some-odd years ago I got a bottle sent to my table at a French restaurant by a friend of a friend (such a cool move!!) and fell in love with it. Found it again all these years later at Doc's/Spec's on Slide — 4 years ago

9.5

Lovely smooth dark (dunkel) beer from the excellent Erdinger brewery. Mild flavour from dark malted wheat and barley that has subtle chocolate and plum notes with a hint of sweetness with a mild but lingering mouthful. Great on draft, but bottled as was mine was, remains a treat. — 5 years ago

Lager Beer

Nothing especially fancy here but it was a smooth cold beer, so I'm not mad at it. If you've had a Sapporo draft you've essentially had this. Thai massage costs extra. — 9 years ago

@Bill Bender Bill I know that SD and CA have some of the best beers on the planet. Ballast Point Sculpin and Stone's IPA among others. Here's a few of my BC favorites: Nasty Habit- Mt. Begbie Co, Thunderpunch and Amnesiac-Phillips, Shipwreck IPA- Lighthouse Brewing and my all time favorite Fat Tug- Driftwood Brewery. Cheers 🍻

Thank you @Phil A there are several local stores and restaurants that carry huge inventories of bottles and/or beer on tap. I'm going to see if I can locate any of these in SD

Doc's Ranch: JoAnn's Block Chardonnay 2021

Beguiling wine with aromatic and structural intensity, yet airy weightlessness. 11.2%- I think they probably could have pushed this to at least 11.6 — 5 months ago

Suntory

The Premium Malt's Pilsner

Suntory Premium Malt (Yellow Can) - I like this one the best although the can does not match a draft. The Premium Malt’s Kaoru Ale (Blue Can, 香るエール) is a bit sweeter and softer. I like gold, son likes blue. I can see why but am getting old and like the familiar. — 10 months ago

Pommard & 114 Selection Doc's Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018

Ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Fruity nose with cherries, sweet raspberries, light wood and chocolate notes.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with cherries, red currants, plums, light wood, earth, herbs, spices and black pepper.

Tangy finish with soft tannins and tangy cranberries.

This 8 year old Single Vineyard Pinot Noir is drinking at its peak now, and will continue to drink nicely in the next few years.

Easy drinking, fruit forward and engaging. Elegant, complex and nicely balanced.

A good quality wine. Good by itself as a sipping wine or with food.

A good sipping wine that will pair nicely with food too.

100% Pinot Noir grapes were aged for 20 months in (30% New) French Oak barrels. A small production of less than 4,000 bottles.

13.9% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$100.
