Evidently Tam o’Shanter is a famous poem by Robert Burns. People refer to the witch in the poem as Cutty Sark but that’s not her name, it’s instead a comment on what she was wearing. Who knew…

The witch in Tam o’ Shanter’s real name isn’t Cutty Sark, even though that’s what she’s called in pop culture. A “cutty-sark” was a term for a short, revealing dress or an undergarment, so Tam was being rather rude by calling her that! Robert Burns gave her the name ‘Nannie’ or ‘Nannie Dee’ instead.
