Château Kirwan 2023 – Margaux, Grand Cru Classé. BDX France 🇫🇷
Overview
A poised and expressive Margaux showing immediate charm while clearly structured for further evolution, delivering finesse, persistence, and a notably elongated finish compared to its peers in the flight.
Aromas & Flavors
Red cherry, wild strawberry, ripe raspberry, crushed rose petal, subtle vanilla, sweet spice, light cedar, gentle graphite undertones.
Mouthfeel
Medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, excellent mid-palate energy, lifted acidity, and a long, persistent, and increasingly intense finish that carries well beyond the sip.
Food Pairings
Duck confit, herb-roasted chicken, veal chop with mushroom jus, lamb loin, aged Comté.
Verdict
Head-to-head with Château Prieuré-Lichine in overall quality, but Kirwan separates itself on finish length and persistence. Already surprisingly enjoyable today while still clearly benefiting from additional bottle age.
🍷 Personal Pick
The surprise overachiever of the Margaux flight, already fun now, but patience will unlock its real podium potential. — 4 months ago
53 Ch Kirwan : glorious medium bodied rose colour obviously with browning at meniscus but still looking in super shape for a wine of this age. Classically cool crisp Bordeaux nose , the bouquet of rose, a hint of "terroir" (Brett) ; lively (!) entry, flavours of rose , bramble berry , lovely touch of fruit sweetness (!) long flavours dancing thanks to beautiful natural acidity. Classic Margaux commune. A beauty.

Chateau Kirwan 1981. Smoky jalapeño kind of reminds of mescal. Lots decaying leaves and dirt, old leather, with a hint of oxidation on the nose. The tannins and acid held up quite well for 34 year old Bordeaux from a cooler vintage. — 11 years ago
Jack Petras
Having this 1996 in 2926 just for the heck of it on Memorial Day with a grilled ribeye and rosemary. Potatoes, it’s still surprisingly alive with deep leather, some hint of Bret, and plums and dark berries. Tastes like one of the first aged Bordeaux I ever had many years ago, not sublime but funkily pleasant — 7 days ago
