The Nines by Law Grenache 2016

Shay A
9.4

I’ve had a few Law wines and have enjoyed them all, but this bottle of “The Nines” was a total stunner. In a lineup of 16 bottles of Grenache (Andremily, SQN, Fingers Crossed, Saxum, Lillian, Alban, Pegau Capo, Prefert, Clarendon Hills, etc), this was one of the more surprising wines of the day (in a good way).

100% Grenache. Removed the cork for about an hour ahead of time. Undeniable Grenache aromatics of red florals, cherry/kirsch liqueur, black peppered strawberries, and fruitcake. As Grenache so wonderfully does, it has a weightless yet commanding palate…kaleidoscope of red and black berries, sweet jerky, and an interplay of both sweet and spicy spices. Doesn’t show whole cluster/green hints like some of the others, and it also doesn’t show overwhelming vanilla/oak tannin either. Elegant and delicious.

May have underscored this…

Sine Qua Non

Capo dei Putti Syrah 2014

Inky in color with a short purple rim. Not showing age at all.

Fruity nose, but not very pronounced.

Dry and very fruity on the palate with nice complexity.

Showing blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, oak, spices, dark chocolates, light vanilla, coffee, black pepper, earth, tobacco leaf and herbs.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This 10 year old Syrah is starting to drink nicely now, although still very young. Rich, extracted and definitely in your face kind of wine.

Needs a few hours to open up. I gave it 2 hours in the decanter, but it was not enough, and unfortunately it finished too quickly.

Will continue to age nicely in the next 15 years.

Big, bold and beautiful.

Robert Parker 96 points.

A blend of 90% Syrah, 3% Petite Sirah, 5% Viognier and 2% Grenache. Aged for 38 months in new French oak barrels.

16.2% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$325.

Cuvée Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2004

Sublime. Iron fist, velvet glove and all that. Beyond doubt that this cuvée rocks when Capo not made. Decant briefly and sip away slowly. — 4 years ago

Tasca D'Almerita

Almerita Brut Chardonnay

Very refreshing siting by the pool at Capo Faro winery. Citrus, yeasty, and a candied aroma….perhaps butterscotch. Crisp on the palette with a nice acidity. — 2 years ago

Cantine Colosi

Secca del Capo Malvasia 2018

Italy. White. Sicilian.
100% Malvasia grapes. This was a really interesting one; got hints of sea salt more than fruit (maybe some lemon and nectarine), straw color, thick compared to most Italian white blend/moscato/Pinot Grigio...more like a chardonnay consistency but no buttery taste - tasted much lighter. Think of cooking with butter vs olive oil - this is more like olive oil. Went wonderfully with seafood (spaghetti alle vongole)...used it to cook the dish too. Don’t really taste the alcohol (13.5% alc. by vol.). I really liked it and it was unlike other whites I’ve tried. More expensive than other whites I’ve tried but I definitely would get it again as I felt it had more depth. Not a sparkling or wine with “zing”.
