Quella Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Shay A
9.5

After a couple months of hiatus, the Friday City Club group was able to get back together (albeit a smaller, more spread out group) for an epic hosting by @joe leatherwood . 1 sparkler, 2 whites, 5 reds and 1 dessert wine, all served blind.

The first of a monster lineup of 5 incredible red wines. For the first 10-15mins, this was actually my favorite. Very high toned and lifted. Bright. Rich red fruits, spicy black fruits, kirsch, sage and potpourri jump from the glass. On the palate, it was the most elegant of the five with Black Forest cake, mulberries, cedar, dark chocolate shavings and baking spices. I called this 7-10yr old Napa cab (but it certainly seemed a bit of an outlier compared to the next 4!)

St. Eden Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2012

Compared to the 2012 Quella it was next to, this was much darker in style. Scorched blue and black fruit, sandalwood, plums and mocha on the nose. Copious amounts of dark chocolate and fresh squeezed dark fruits on the palate wrapped in a silky and slightly dusty profile. I called this 7-10yr old Napa cab.

This was tied for my favorite red, and is among one of the finest wines I’ve ever had. For me, this could very easily reach perfection in 5-7yrs. It had the nose and palate in spades. Almost as high toned as the Bond Quella with the more dense and dark profile of the Bond St Eden. Sweet red and blue fruit mixed berry pie on the nose, alongside cherry wood, nutmeg, and espresso. Ultra fine grained tannins...texture here is amazing. Added black fruits on the palate, violets, peppercorn, sweetened pipe tobacco and fresh squeezed fruits on the finish. What a wine! I called this 7-10yr old Napa cab.

Vecina Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

Delectable Wine
9.4

Dark ruby-red. Aromas of cassis, black cherry, blackberry, mocha and licorice. Concentrated, dense and fully ripe, conveying a much more pliant texture today than the 2002. But this is also sappy, fine-grained and nicely delineated, with its dark berry and black cherry fruit flavors given shape by a brooding element of savory minerality. Not hugely sweet, though, and clearly less liqueur-like than the 2002. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins that should carry this wine for at least another 15 years. The Mascot

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

10, Mascot - Bill Harlan
10 is the third release of the Mascot, Bill Harlan's wine produced with grapes from the younger vines at Harlan Estate, Bond, Promontory. If you’re able to afford these three wines. This would be considered your everyday drinking Cali Cab🙂

90% Cab & the rest is PV & CF
Pulled the cork an hour before we went to dinner. Even better after a further hour of decanting when we arrived.

This bottle is firing on all cylinders. Deep ruby color in the glass. All the black fruit you can squeeze into a bottle, with some earthiness. Additional notes of a syrup/tobacco taste to it, dark chocolate. The tannins & acidity 6/10. The finished lingers for a good 30+ seconds.

Four - five years ago this wasn’t near as approachable as it is today. Enjoy them now or over the next decade. Cheers

Agreed! After some aging this becomes a much more impressive some than the “younger Harlan vine” label implies.

@David L we drank our last 2012 recently. I can’t remember exactly what I thought it was blind, but I remember thinking it was a high-pedigree and more expense wine. I recently purchased a few bottles of their current release (2015), which will ship in the fall.
