Marnes & Calcaire Grand Cru Steinert Riesling 2014

Celebrating Bastille Day with the spring dinner of the Confrerie St Etienne of Alsace association. Wonderful menu and perfectly paired wines.

Lemon and pear. Repeat. Lots of reductive notes on this wine. Not sure I would have called Alsatian Riesling blind. Hardly any petrol. Viscous. Definitely best served chilled. Once it warmed, the flavors became too melded (lots of pear, lemon tart, and stone fruit). Needs time.

Kickass. Wine of the night. So pure and bright. No funk at all. Crystalline lemon, stone fruit, flowers, and rocks. The Kobe is really pretty, then the palate cones in and turns shit up to 11. — 10 years ago

Zinnkoepflé Alsace Grand Cru Gewürztraminer

Gewurztraminer from the Zinnkoepflé Grand Cru - known for producing exceptional, very aromatic Gewurztraminer. Located above the villages of Soultzmatt and Westhalten (west of Colmar), the Zinnkoepflé takes its name from “Sonne Koepflé” - the local name given to small circular marine fossils found in its
predominantly sandstone-limestone soils (some examples on display at the winery). Fragrant, round, smooth.

Simply amazing. I would guess we’re talking ca 100 grams of RS here, but sooo balanced. Lots of orange and mandarin flavours, complicated by spice and hints of marzipan. Ripe peach too. In some magical way, the acidity, minerality and structure manage to hold this bold wine together. Very, very long finish. I wish more people will explore these unique wines. Foie Gras, yes please. — 8 years ago

Clos Saint Landelin Vin d'Alsace Riesling 2012

According to the back label this is a Vorbourg Grand Cru. It's a beautiful dry Riesling and could easily be mistaken for a German GG from a superripe vintage (which I consider a compliment). Candied lemon, wet rocks, peach yoghurt, peppery finish. Lovely. — 10 years ago

Breitenberg Riesling

Riesling from the Breitenberg vineyard in Westhalten. Vines are about 35 years old and rooted in sandstone (buntsandstein) soils. Pale golden color. Delicate nose with aromas of citrus (lemon, lime), mineral, saline. Citrus on the palate (mostly lime). Zesty acidity. Long finish. Saline notes. Really refreshing — 5 years ago

Alsace Pinot Gris Tradition 2014

This is perhaps the biggest bargain around if you can find it. Refreshing, fragrant, and tones of pear along with other fleshy fruits. At around $10, if you want a great light summertime wine, this is it! — 9 years ago
