Piccadilly Valley Chardonnay 2013

See previous notes 30 weeks ago. Very similar. Mid Lemon in colour. Citrus on the nose with grapefruit predominant. The palate is overall a little more lean than I would like - a little austere for a 7 year old Chardonnay - perhaps the grapes were picked a little too early? Still lively with that acid but could do with a little more mid palate fruit. Made by Brian Croser who used to be at Petaluma some years ago before he started Tapanappa in 2002 in conjunction with Bollinger and the Cazes Family of Lynch Bages in Pauillac. Brian was Decanters Man of the Year in 2004. — 2 months ago

Definitus Foggy Hill Pinot Noir 2017

Gorgeous, delicate wine with strong bones. The smoky stemminess is present, reminiscent of the 2017 Foggy Hill, but with more refinement. Fine tannins, precise acid line. It’s drinking beautifully today at release (especially with duck!), but the aged Foggy Hill alongside it speaks of the incredible potential. — a year ago

You definitely must! And you’ve reminded me that I’m overdue for a S+S visit. Also looking forward to opening a 2006 S+S Pinot Noir that I pulled out of the cellar the other day — will be a good comparison with recent tastings of Barratt and Golding.

Man O' War Vineyards

Warspite Cabernet Franc Blend 2012

A weekend for new world Bordeaux blends, apparently. This one is fragrant and so soft and approachable, with fruitcake spice and dark berries and dark chocolate; ever so drinkable. There’s depth and complexity but it has a lightness and prettiness — quite a contrast to the Tapanappa it’s sitting side-by-side with tonight. — 6 months ago

Château Bel-Air Lagrave

Cru Bourgeois Moulis en Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 1996

Mystery wine at Tapanappa vertical tasting. Leather and spice with hints of mint on the nose. Still plenty of life in it at 22 years old; I’m sure the magnum helps. — 3 years ago

Wratton Bully Whalebone Vineyard Merlot Cabernet Franc 2007

The second of a couple of new world Bordeaux blends tonight. Many similarities and yet a great contrast. This opens enclosed in a mysterious shroud of mustiness that’s gradually opening up. Beneath is an intense concentration of dark purple fruit, accompanied by just the right grip of tannins. It’s intriguing and also evolving in the glass. The Man O’ War seems more approachable, but this one potentially more impressive. — 6 months ago

Domaine Chanson (Chanson Père et Fils)

Clos des Mouches Beaune 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2016

In the context of a long pinot lunch, this was one of my favourites. It’s still very young and primary, but it’s full of smooth, velvety weight. Plush. So full of potential. Opposite end of the scale to the Tapanappa Definitus, but delicious. — a year ago

(Delectable, a simple search on the Tapanappa website will give you the correct naming of this wine!) The nose on this! I spend more time sniffing than sipping. Gorgeous Piccadilly chardonnay, delightful in its youth and with a huge future ahead of it. — 3 years ago
