Zinnkoepflé Alsace Grand Cru Gewürztraminer

Gewurztraminer from the Zinnkoepflé Grand Cru - known for producing exceptional, very aromatic Gewurztraminer. Located above the villages of Soultzmatt and Westhalten (west of Colmar), the Zinnkoepflé takes its name from “Sonne Koepflé” - the local name given to small circular marine fossils found in its
predominantly sandstone-limestone soils (some examples on display at the winery). Fragrant, round, smooth.

Marnes & Calcaire Grand Cru Steinert Riesling 2014

8.9

Celebrating Bastille Day with the spring dinner of the Confrerie St Etienne of Alsace association. Wonderful menu and perfectly paired wines.

Lemon and pear. Repeat. Lots of reductive notes on this wine. Not sure I would have called Alsatian Riesling blind. Hardly any petrol. Viscous. Definitely best served chilled. Once it warmed, the flavors became too melded (lots of pear, lemon tart, and stone fruit). Needs time.

Steinert Alsace Gran Cru Gewurztraminer 2011

2011 vintage. Marc Humbrecht is the 13th generation winemaker of this small Alsace estate ( 6 hectares under vine). This 11 years old Gewürztraminer from the Steinert Grand Cru vineyard is simply stunning. Intense perfume of lychee and rose petals. Obvious residual sugar (the back label indicates a 4 out of 6 sweetness level), that beautifully balances out the typical spicy bitterness of this grape variety. It is layered, complex and very long. If you like lychee you will love this one! — 2 years ago

Steinert Flaxman Valley Shiraz 2018

This is an exceptional inaugural release from Callum Powell and his Agricola label. It’s pure and bright with ample flesh and some beautiful Flaxmanns Valley concentration. Merv Steinert’s old vines made up the core of Rockford’s SVS Flaxmann in the day and they have a happy home here - 2018 — 5 years ago

Breitenberg Riesling

Riesling from the Breitenberg vineyard in Westhalten. Vines are about 35 years old and rooted in sandstone (buntsandstein) soils. Pale golden color. Delicate nose with aromas of citrus (lemon, lime), mineral, saline. Citrus on the palate (mostly lime). Zesty acidity. Long finish. Saline notes. Really refreshing — 3 years ago

Alsace Grand Cru Steinert Gewurztraminer 2015

Light straw unfiltered in the glass. VA strong at first on the nose with oxidized forward, mellowing out nicely as it opened and smelling of ripe toasted fruits. Full bodied and round with good acidity cutting through. Tasting of tropical fruit, bananas, and melon with a fresh spiciness. Overall, a lovely and complex Gewurtz from Alsace - big and bold and fun to drink. Pairs well with gnocchi and ricotta. — 3 years ago
