Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico Frappato Nero d'Avola 2017

I love these wines that are most definitely not playing to the masses. Medium garnet with a wide brim. The nose is highly attractive fresh out of the gate. A ridiculous amount of fruit here with blackberries, black cherries, and strawberries. Eucalyptus and smoke. Herbs and spice. Beautiful earth and foresty goodness with the suggestion of funk. Terrific aromas.

COS uses clay amphorae for storage and biodynamic viticulture to produce wines as naturally as possible. 60% Nero d’Avola, 40% Frappato di Vittoria. This is all about the terroir, it’s a glorious wine that truly speaks of a place and is driven by that. The acid is nice and vibrant and the tannins round. Plenty more fruit to be found on the palate with red and black fruits. More dusty earth, leather, and stones. A long finish that leaves you wanting more. And my friends, you do want more.

Rosso di Contrada Nero d'Avola

Loved this red. Super tannic and dry. So robust you almost need to pair it with food. Smells like bright fruits (strawberry, raspberry). Would love to have again — 4 days ago

Vino Rosso Nero d'Avola Blend 2019

This blend of Nero d’Avola, Frappato (locally called Nerocapitano), and Grenache is a Sicilian beauty! 💕 🇮🇹

It was lovingly nurtured and cultivated by hand and in a manner paying respect to the land from which it came, with minimal intervention, by husband and wife team Filippo and Nancy Rizzo. 🍇 🍷👌

Lamoresca, Rosso, Sicily, Vintage 2019, ABV 13.5%. @lamorescavini

👁 It’s a medium purple hue.

👃 On the nose it has a medium(+) intensity of youthful, bright, and yet savory aromas that include ripe raspberry, plum, black cherry, rhubarb, violet, clove, nutmeg, peppercorn, licorice, leather, tobacco, wet earth, and game.

👄 On the palate this wine is dry. It has medium acidity, a medium(+) body, medium alcohol, medium tannins, and medium intensity of flavors consistent with the nose. The finish lingers. 👏👏👏

Cheers to this lovely, highly delicious wine 🍷

Gàbal Nero d'Avola 2018

McCarthy & Schiering, $15

Dark ruby, fairly opaque. Nose is a total fruit bomb with a bit of astringency. My mom used to have a black plum tree in the front yard where the plums would have super sweet dark plum flesh with a very sour thick skin. If you add a touch of cherry that's exactly what this wine tastes like. Somehow both sweet and very tart, full flavor and pretty high tannins, also has a noticeable alcohol bite. Still very nice, if maybe a bit one dimensional. I'm going to have to check out more Nero D'avola

Suber Nero d'Avola Blend 2017

I probably drink too many Etna wines, so for a change here’s a Sicilian wine that is NOT from the volcano. It’s from the center of the island, near the city of Caltagirone, and it’s an unusual blend of two expected grapes (Nero d’Avola and Frappato) and one fairly unexpected one (Alicante Bouschet). Grown in dense vineyards planted with head-trained bush vines at about 1000 feet above sea level, this wine has a deep garnet color and a stony core surrounded by blackberry, licorice, and black cherry fruit. At once ripe and chiseled with acidity, this is a perfect expression of Sicily in many ways. It bears the i Vigneri stamp of consultant Salvo Foti, a good sign if there ever was one on Sicilian bottles. — 15 days ago
