Concrete Field Blend White

Normally I don’t post #samples, but this one combined so much esoterica tied up nearly in a bow by a kind human and winemaker: an amphora aged white field blend of 25% Blaufrankisch, 25% Arbiuriou, 25% zweigelt, 13% Savignan Rose, 5% Gruner, 5% Melon de Bourgogne, 2% Petite Arvine and it doesn’t suck. Yes, definitely gimmicky and natty, but in addition to the expected kombucha and bruised apple notes, it has a really pleasing limestone mineral character, along with an exciting texture and tension. Purple Cow

One of my favorite breweries in the south. I know, I know, Sweetwater in Atlanta’s great and all, but Crooked Can outta Orlando is something else.

Their seasonal Oktoberfest pictured on the right hits all the right Autumn notes.

Purple Cow to the left of that has got nice açaí, blueberry, and licorice notes.

Down the line, the Pia Kawa is a perfect tart pineapple sipper.

Finally, the Mellow Step, probably the favorite of the flight, has got the perfect amount of hops balanced with a saltwater taffy mango afternote.

10 mile bike ride and flights on the West Orange Trail. Chill.

Small Batch Sour Mash Whiskey 1753

Applewood, poached pear, maple syrup and pecans with black lime, ginger lemon-honey, orange bitters, rosemary, baked sweet potatoes oozing créme fraîche, brown sugar and caramel. It’s a noseful! Hot, herbaceous mouthful on the coat. Warm maduro-caramel turns noir in the slanted chiaroscuros of toffee and brittle, respectively. Big lemon citrus with orange zest, banana bread, sage, allspice, mace, cedar, pipe tobacco puff, black raisin, with a svelte acid streak running the length of a generous satin mouthfeel. Impossible value here. Peach cobbler, caramel-apple, baked pear tartlet, pine nettle, sweet corn, dried red cherry, cedar-on-grill, brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, chilies, generous oak that includes acorns, crisp vanilla cookie make the nose. Hot initially, with oregano oil, cinnamon and tobacco. Revisit yields subtleties, including lemon oil, grapefruit pith, orange peel, arabica, eucalyptus, apricot, red chilies, Mexican cigar spices, and peppercorn dust. Cinnamon-oak builds to a crescendo of resinous might in a cloud of foundry smoke. Allspice appears with oregano following hot on its trail. Full bodied and bold with medium acidity.

Dry and extremely fruity on the palate with a nice mouthfeel.

Showing mild complexity and easy drinking, so watch out.

Drank 9\20\20. Nice with a bacon cheeseburger.

Medium nose of black and blue fruits with some spice and a bit of herbaceousness as well. Big, but balanced with cassis, blueberry, and a bit of spice all backed by medium plus tannins. Long finish and great balance. I can't think of too many good cabs for under $20, and this one delivers for closer to $10. Incredible value.

Burrata, roasted garlic, garden cherry tomatoes, olive oil, pesto and Tondo balsamic with chopped pistachios for texture.

The nose is showing; candied, lean, strawberries, cherries, blood oranges, tangerines, raspberries, shades of black cherries, sweet rhubarb, brilliant pink rose petals with some red mixed in, vanillin, watermelon Jolly Rancher, slight herbaceousness, beautiful, saline notes, delicate chalk and sandstone minerality.

The palate palate rushes in juicy, lush and then slides in chalky powder with a slightly waxiness character & near tannin presence. You definitely sense this is made from a hearty grape varietal, like Touriga Nacional. It has beautiful viscosity. rushing cool river acidity. Candied, lean, strawberries, cherries, blood oranges, tangerines, raspberries, shades of black cherries, sweet rhubarb, brilliant pink rose petals with some red mixed in, vanillin, watermelon Jolly Rancher, slight, fresh herbaceousness, saline notes, beautiful, delicate chalk, sandstone & gripping limestone/volcanic minerality. The finish is refreshing, nicely balanced and smartly polished.

I was curious about their Rosé and wanted to try it. However, it will benefit with another one to two years in bottle.

Trousseau 2018

I was not that familiar with this varietal and so thought I would wiki for all interested: “Trousseau or Trousseau Noir, also known as Bastardo and Merenzao, is an old variety of red wine grape originating in eastern France. It is grown in small amounts in many parts of Western Europe; the largest plantations are today found in Portugal, where most famously it is used in port wine. It makes deep cherry red wines with high alcohol and high, sour candy acidity, and flavours of red berry fruits, often complemented - depending on production - by a jerky nose and an organic, mossy minerality.” — 10 days ago

Stems, skins, leftover grape pulp, polyphenols. Gimme all that and more.

This stuff is perfect to be canned and sold to the masses for beach day gallops and picnic frolics.

Intense, supercharged, lychee on Fast & The Furious NOS. Ludacris and The Rock give their blessings on this whip of a drink. Okay, too much.

But this is such a great way to use the byproduct that would normally go to waste and it’s tasty and extremely drinkable.
