With 120 g/L of residual sweetness, the 2018 Gewurztraminer Fronholz Vendanges Tardives opens with notions of blossom honey, Damask rose and juicy lychee. The mouthfeel is luscious, round and brimming with sweet yellow peach compote. The rose perfume pervades everything with its floral intensity. This is a dessert in itself, concentrated less by botrytis than by passerillage, preserving the varietal integrity and a super-charged purity of fruit. This needs careful pairing but will outlast us all. (Anne Krebiehl, Vinous, April 2023) — 7 months ago
2018 vintage. Good representation of the sweeter side of Gewurztraminer. Equivalent to spätlese ripeness and weight. Candied pink grapefruit, tangerine, gardenia, jasmine, white tea, poached pear, candied citrus peel, lychee. Lacks the oiliness that the variety sometimes tends to, lots of acidity to counterbalance the sweetness. — 3 years ago
This wine came around to be very very nice. Needed a bit to open up but then good. — 5 years ago
Very nice. Cherry, touch of green, some reduction — a year ago
Delicious Pinot Gris, lovely balance of strong apple and pear fruit with high notes of acidity mid palate. — 2 years ago

Ostertag always comes through for me. This is a well made classic Alsatian Gewurztraminer with a mineral kick that gives it ⚡️ — 5 years ago

See my note from 37 weeks ago for the fascinating back story on this wine and the Sylvaner grape in general which has had some bad press in the past for being dilute. This was anything but dilute. All the descriptors in my October 2022 tasting note still apply. Also stewed apricot notes with mouldy orange. Medium to full bodied on the palate. Unique and delicious. This wine does not need oak maturation (and doesn’t get it), just like Semillon and Riesling don’t need it, although it is optional with Semillon. — 5 months ago
