Texas High Plains Sangiovese 2020

I am as shocked as you are to find this fine a wine emanating from Texas…anywhere. This Mozzafiato is medium-full bodied blend soft on the palate, almost perfect balance and overall somewhat elegant in complexity…and with an obviously Italian “heritage”. A rich but not at all sweet blend of Sangiovese 22%, Barbera 26%, Dolcetti 20% and Primativo 42%. 14% alcohol, too expensive now but if Robert Parker tries it, maybe not. — 5 months ago

Evangelho Vineyard Heritage Zinfandel Blend

Binnys closeout. Paring with Kansas style bbq bone on country pork rib chops, acorn squash and collard greens. Wine is youthful vibrant and delicious. Savory balsamic fresh cedars notes decorate the jammy yet fleshy mild tannined fruits. — 6 years ago

Gaston Rosé 2016

Planned a weekend getaway to the Texas Hill Country for my wife after completing/surviving another year of teaching 5 year olds in kindergarten. Love Fredericksburg and so pleasantly surprised that TX are most definitely increasing in quality. Stunned at some of our finds so far!

Calais winery is owned and run by a Frenchman, who is from the northern part of France near Belgium. Ben definitely uses his heritage in crafting these wines and has made a beautiful marriage with this rosé. TX is churning out a massive amount of quality rosés, and after trying 7 different rosés yesterday, this was the winner. I get grapefruit on the nose and finish, alongside faint hints of kiwi and melon. The body and texture on this are superb! (FYI, he seems to be a wizard at Cab Franc here in TX, where that varietal struggles. Well worth a bottle)

Pagani Ranch Heritage Sonoma Valley Red Blend 2015

Do yourself a favor and follow Esther Mobley on Twitter. She’s the Wine, Beer & Spirits writer for the San Francisco Chronicle and her reporting on the wine country fires is extraordinary... “1880s vines at Old Hill Ranch in Sonoma Valley. Gone” (photo credit to her also).
I had to open the 2015 Bedrock Pagani Ranch Heritage from Morgan Twain-Peterson MW (pictured right) which is also from 1880s vines and just a few miles north of the Old Hill Ranch along Sonoma Highway. It had me immediately saying prayers that the Pagani Ranch would be spared — it’s stunningly pure and absolutely glorious... think choirs of angels. As if a top Châteauneuf-du-Pape producer, like Janasse or Clos Saint Jean, traded their 100+ year old Grenache for 100+ year old Zinfandel. Giant, but radiant red fruit that has a kirsch and violet edge to it. Add in some dense blackberry to a base of rich minerality and this soars into a cloud of herbs and spices including Herbes de Provence, adding baking spice, licorice, and wildflowers along the way, with some secondary cured meat and cracked pepper which gives this the depth and complexity it deserves. Beautiful.

Edition Ponsart Nr. Trocken Spätburgunder 2015

Pinot from a country situated amongst the most northerly wine growing regions on the planet, where wine is proudly labeled by how ripe their grapes can even become in their colder habitat. This Ponsard No. 26 Pinot Noir from the world's oldest vintner cooperative was something to behold. Deeply earthen, dark fruit notes and minerality come out of an old and wooden closet, with a leaving of mushrooms and roses. — 7 years ago

Blueberry Merlot

Hint of blueberry tones down the merlot but is not sweet at all. Very smooth to drink. — 8 years ago
