Astralis Syrah 1997

Pure and powerful but completely resolved. There’s a core of iron tinged red meat and dark blue fruit but hints of black tea, white pepper and spice. As much Burg as Côté-Rotie at this point, completely ready to go. — 11 days ago

The Black Pig Reserve McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017

Deep dark Ruby in colour - almost black. Ripe dark plum flesh and skins on nose and palate - sweet fruit and chocolate. A mouthful of flavour if not a bit simple. McLaren Vale does these big rich Shirazes well. A crowd pleaser with excellent QPR - a gift from my brother in law. — 25 days ago

Sandown Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

This is drinking so well now. Lovely bouquet, smooth and round with a long long aftertaste. Dense, powerful and lively, with many years ahead of it. — 21 days ago

The Islander Estate Vineyards

The Investigator Kangaroo Island Cabernet Franc 2008

See previous notes. My last bottle - purchased at the winery on Kangaroo Island. 100% Cabernet Franc. Herbs , Tea leaves, Charcoal, Black, fruits, a touch of caramel oak. Quite a full bodied opulent wine showing those black fruits. A product of the warm 2008 vintage in South Australia. A classy wine balancing the ripe fruit with the right amount of oak treatment. Very polished as you would expect from a $150 wine. Shows Jaques Lurton’s (Cheval Blanc) experience with the Cabernet Franc grape. — 8 days ago

Hickinbotham Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Picked up from Langtons for only $30. Typically Clarendon hills volatility but less depth of fruit than the Shirazes. Some lovely Cabernet fine tannin plus almost raisiny tertiary fruit. Lovely drink. — a month ago
