Rayner Vineyard Shiraz 1999

A exploration of nine 1999 Cote Rotie - Syrahs and Shiraz on their 25th anniversary. This Aussie was my fave of the lineup. — 4 days ago

ILR Reserve Hunter Valley Sémillon 2017

No formal notes. Quite rich , grassy and waxy but still lots of lime and lemon character . Quite taught , mostly lean lime and lemon , beeswax character fruit on the palate . Long and detailed on the finish with a toasty touch . Great intensity . Needs time , still quite primary , I would expect this will improve over the next 10-15 years and last well a further 10 @ Brokenwood Winery , Hunter Valley — 21 days ago

Drayton's Family Wines

William Shiraz 2011

Dense Crimson in colour. The nose and palate on this full bodied red are more reminiscent of a South Australian Red than the medium bodied savoury style typical of the Hunter Valley. Just the faintest hint of HV sweat and earth. This showed rich ripe black currant with smooth tannins. It’s a pity there was a time when HV wines tried to mimic the SA styles which were more popular. This is an example of that. Quite a good wine but not true to its origins. Thankfully the main HV wineries have returned to their original style - think Mount Pleasant Maurice O’Shea, Brokenwood Graveyard and Tyrells Individual Paddocks. — 3 years ago

Hunter Valley Sémillon 2012

Light lemon colour . Beeswax , lemongrass , lemon peel on the nose. On the palate good body, with lemon and lime notes , beeswax and a herbaceous tinge . Still fresh acidity , this comes across as really quite young still, without the honied, toasty notes you expect with age . Still quite light on its feet, elegant and relatively lean . The length is ok , and perhaps lacks a little intensity on the mid palate , but for the basic Semillon this shows well . Drink now and over the next 10 years — 20 days ago

Not yet at peak
A little less fleshy than ILR reserve
Still a wonderful example of the potential of this typology of wine

Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz 2021

No formal notes. Bright bright ruby colour , pink rim . Quite high toned red fruit with a touch of smoked spice on the nose , attractive and inviting . Strawberry , red plum , raspberry , orange rind and black pepper on the palate , mirroring the nose . Very good depth , rounded , velvety but noticeable tannins . Good fresh acidity, detailed and precise on the palate . Saline touch on the long finish with balanced alcohol. This is at the beginning of a long life , though it’s quality is clear . Even better in 10 years and last a further 10-15 — 21 days ago

They have some hard to get old vine Shiraz like Old Patch; 4 Acres and Johnnos Shiraz. Unless you’re a member I’ve had to buy through retailers who charge a lot more. Perhaps offered at Cellar Door but production would be small.

Yes most of the limited wines they had sold out of … which I suppose is no surprise . But they did have a few older vintages of some of the Semillons, which I managed to purchase !
