Domaine François Raveneau

Montée de Tonnerre Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2013

Again I had this at a friends tasting last Sunday afternoon. No notes taken but I recall more honeyed and mature than Chablis oyster shell characteristics. I should add that Penfolds 1990 707 in the image to the right was exceptional. Drinking at its peak from a good vintage with still some years to go. 97 points for the 707. — 2 months ago

Penfolds

Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

A multi region blend, fruit from Barossa, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Coonawarra and Wrattonbully vineyards, some bin 707 fruit included. Deep Ruby with aromas of dark berry fruits herb and spice. On the palate black cherry and currants with notes of cacao, espresso and herb pepper. Vivid acidity, ripe fine tannins, long finish ending with vanilla oak and spice, very nice! — 4 years ago

Penfolds

Bin 389 South Australia Cabernet Shiraz 1996

You would never pick this as a 26 year old red wine from the colour. A rich Ruby red with no tawny rim. This has the Penfolds DNA of ripe plum, mocha, coffee bean and chocolate - a trace of liquorice. The palate is medium plus weight, balanced and harmonious maintaining that core strength. Those initially firm tannins have become supple. Drinking at its peak but could stay on this plateau for a couple more years. My last bottle of the 96 but I still have a few more bottles of the Bin 707 from 1996 which was a huge wine. — 3 years ago

Any thoughts on the 1983, 1986 and 1991 Grange?

@Byron Hewett The Granges you mention, I have all 3. The 1983 was the product of a drought year. I was planning to drink next year when 40 years old. The 1986 is very good - I have a couple left which I will drink by the end of this decade. I love the 1991 and it often sits in the shadow of the 1990 which really put Grange on the map in the USA winning Wine Spectators wine of the year. I have had several of both years and prefer the 91. You could drink these into the mid to late 2030s. Penfolds put out an excellent reference book on all of their wines and vintages called The Rewards of Patience. Highly recommended.

Leeuwin Estate

Art Series Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

From Magnum. Leeuwin Estate’s Cabernets are becoming as good as their famous Chardonnays. Herbaceous with cassis mineral and savoury tannins. Not as full bodied as the 707 which followed but this is more Text Book Left Bank Cabernet with a long life ahead. Excellent. — 7 years ago

@Steve Bridge great nose with dark red fruit, smoke, leather, and pencil.. might take on more weight with a couple more years on it. Luv the off vintages at a good price since you don't need to wait 20 years. Cheers!

@Bob McDonald 1st time trying and going to look for some older vintages. 2016 is terrific with its blackberry, floral, chalky notes....would luv to try again with 4 more years on it. Cheers!

@Tom Garland I think the first vintage of The Caley was 2012 - Yalumba’s ultra premium.

Lot 707 Mendocino County Merlot 2017

Pours dark inky. Dusty bouquet. Initial dark fruit then explodes with black raspberries and dark fruit in the middle that fills your mouth. Then ends with a short jammy dryness. A bold merlot. — 5 years ago
