ZD Wines
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Founded in 1969 by two rocket scientists, ZD takes its name not only from its founders, Norman de Leuze and Gino Zepponi, but also from the engineering term Zero Defects. Sleek in its design, but with serious thrust, comparisons could be made to Corison or Montelena Estate, as well as some Left Bank Châteaux. Tart cranberry, cherry, and plum abound with purity, followed by 70% cacao, fresh pine, and damp cedar. Some secondary coconut oil adds a slightly exotic feel to an otherwise old school, savory-styled Napa Cab. Excellent. 93+

1 person found it helpfulJan 31st, 2018WOW!!!!!!!! Okay, as you probably know, Im not shy about giving a perfect score. If I could change one thing, the initial palate is a tad sweet. But Holy Stars!!!!!!!
The cork is so perfectly preserved its unbelievable. It looks like a one year old wine cork. The bouquet is pure oak and cedar with remnants of charcoal. Talk about barrel aged! The color is dark dark dark midnight purple. The legs are long and thick lasting a full 12 seconds. Now after decanting for 5 min the sweet beginning is gone. It is now perfect! This is my new favorite wine! The initial palate is blackberry currant and spice. The beginning of the finish is black pepper. The finish is milk chocolate and very buttery which dissipates very fast and leaves you grasping the stem for another indulgence.
I will keep this in my cellar as my house wine for serious wine lovers such as myself!

Jun 11th, 2016Had this wine with chocolate, after dinner and it was perfect. Full, rich and showing very well. Dark and red fruit, nice pop of oak on the finish and absolutely perfectly paired with dark chocolate.

Nov 23rd, 20152012 vintage. Will start this review by stating this is the first ZD wine in over 3 decades that I've actually enjoyed and felt warranted purchasing. The usual, gratuitous oak has subsided and there are some beautiful complexities. Here. Now. Medium body. Quintessential (non-mountain fruit) Napa. Conjures up zero hero Bordeaux comparisons or historic Napa similarities tho. Really nice for what it is. Drink now or for a decade. 9.6.23.
