I’m not ashamed to say that I didn’t guess the varietal correct when served to me blind.
Extremely fruity for me it more resembles Merlot or even a understated Syrah.

While the 2012 was impressive last week, it also had me nervous that the 2014 might need some time. This is not the case. Immediately approachable, with generous crème de cassis and blackberry ganache, and stopping just short of being a fruit bomb. Sourced from several small Napa vineyards, each vineyard lot is fermented separately and then spends a year in American oak before blending and then another year in barrel. The lush, ripe fruit is ever so lightly tinged with a pyrazine patina, reining-in the otherwise boundless fruit. ZD’s 2014 has received numerous gold medals at such competitions as the San Francisco Chronicle Int’l, San Diego Int’l, and TEXSOM, but if I’m really being honest, most of my attention is on the Curling tonight. 🥌 🥌 🥌 🥌

Founded in 1969 by two rocket scientists, ZD takes its name not only from its founders, Norman de Leuze and Gino Zepponi, but also from the engineering term Zero Defects. Sleek in its design, but with serious thrust, comparisons could be made to Corison or Montelena Estate, as well as some Left Bank Châteaux. Tart cranberry, cherry, and plum abound with purity, followed by 70% cacao, fresh pine, and damp cedar. Some secondary coconut oil adds a slightly exotic feel to an otherwise old school, savory-styled Napa Cab. Excellent. 93+

Sipping Fine Wine

ZD Winery began as a partnership of two aerospace engineers whose initials formed the name of the winery: Norman de Leuze and Gino Zepponi. Deep dark red with ripe berry fruit aromas with sweet toasty spice. Ripe cherry and blackberry flavor with sweet vanilla oak notes, well balanced. Lingering finish, smooth tannins ending with leather and cacao tones. Will benefit with aging.

What a great surprise. Friend dropped this off and it is a marvel. Rich black fruit soft tannins hints of tobacco and along lingering taste on the mid pallet

Black grape. Black fruit nose initially. Decanted got more of the Hint of tobacco. Vanilla also. After a while more vanilla and bell pepper. Feel too much acidity before decanting. Very good over time. Lasting finish on the tongue
