Wynns Coonawarra Estate
Coonawara Cabernet Sauvignon
Crimson with a Tawny rim showing its age. Mellow and resolved - round and soft at 17 years of age. Black Olive tapenade and chocolatey notes. Leading Australian Wine Scribe, James Halliday, describes Wynns Black Label Cabernet as “the most important Cabernet in Australia with a magnificent history “. The first vintage was 1954 and in a few months time when the 2018 is released it will be the 63rd. Amazing QPR - the current 2017 can be purchased for $31.90 AUD. The wine is matured in new (never more than 20%) and old French and American oak for between 12 and 18 months depending on vintage.

Apr 22nd, 2023It’s raining, it’s Wednesday, so let there be cabernet. At 19 years old its appearance would suggest 5 to 10. Only the slinky smoothness over the palate would hint at the years it’s had to settle. If anything, it’s still a little closed and needs more time in the decanter to open up. Soft dark fruits, hints of tobacco. So easy to drink! But hoping for more character to come through — might revisit tomorrow.

Mar 10th, 2021Absolutely singing at this age. Lovely blend of secondary development, primary fruit freshness and a velvety softness from time in bottle. Head and shoulders above the ‘03.

Oct 14th, 2017Delicious tonight. All sorts of notes in there: blackberry, blackcurrant, cigar box, mint, olive, subtle spice, all set upon a bed of firm tannins. Hasn't been in the decanter long, so looking forward to seeing how it shapes up tomorrow.

Sep 1st, 2017The nose is definitely the highlight. Rich and minty with black fruit undertones. Hints of tobacco. Suggestions of a wine that's still youthful and vivacious. Savoury notes through the mid palate. Slightly sharp finish the only jarring element. Lovely.
