Wind Gap Wines
Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
Wow… a few years relaxing has done well for this 2015. The nose is haunting… Burgundian… Pommardy, and goes on and on. Wish I had another. I’d pay double!

May 12th, 2022Nice fruit, and some earthy, mushroomy complexity, but starting to feel quite a bit tired. Structure is largely dissolved and so it’s a bit washy at this point. The wine likely lacked the intensity to go this far. Regardless, Pax’s wines rarely disappoint. See my review of the 2012 Gap’s Crown PN for a much more successful bottle with similar age.

Dec 14th, 2020Pretty damn Burgundian effort here. Sappy cherry fruit, almost cherry liqueur-like, forest floor, crushed rock, a little baking spice. Intense yet nearly weightless in the mouth. Tannin resolved, great acids. Surprisingly low alcohol (12.4%). Very nice.

Aug 30th, 2020Classical nose of twigs and branches.
Bramble and lace, blackberry kombucha, black tea, and fresh ground cherry. Simply a great bottle.

light translucent ruby; black cherry, herbs, no new oak signature; subdued tart cranberry fruit, prominent savory elements, licorice, very herbal finish; relatively light bodied, bright acidity, bit of fine grained tannin, 12.4% ABV; blend of 6 vineyards in Petaluma Wind Gap of southern Sonoma Coast including Gap’s Crown, Sunchase, Parliament Hill, Griffin’s Lair, Bootlegger’s Hill, and Castelli; wild yeast fermentation in concrete, significant stem inclusion; respectable entry level cool climate Pinot but a bit green/stemmy and lacking typical California fruit

I should have included a picture of the color in the glass because it was mesmerizing - the clarity and perfect autumn hue of Burgundy. The aromatics were delicate but defined - damp earth tones, raspberry, clove, and sandalwood. Perfect tension between fruit and acidity with velvet texture. This wine is made with traditional wine making techniques, natural yeasts, and stem inclusion, bottled at 12.5 ABV.
