Weight Karl Haubs -Barzen Erben Zeltinger Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese 1998.
Deep tawny amber. Nose offers pretty classic orange oil, antique polished wood, oxidative. Palate tastes basically dry with medium high acid and an intense, oxidized/maderized note of toasted sugar and old barrels. Interesting and drinkable, not great.
Paired with bratwurst; fried, homegrown potatoes; homemade sauerkraut salad; cornichons and mustard.

This looks incredibly youthful. The nose is quite pungent with lemon pith and gasoline and a note that reminds me of being a kid and rummaging through my grandmother’s attic. The palate is better than the nose, with slate-tinged lemon oil fruit. Seems surprisingly dry for a Spat. Great acids on the lemon drop finish. A treat!

BD dinner 6/9/20 Bao family mixed Asian take out. Pale straw golden color even at this age library releases JR wine. Nice straw hay petrol nose with that notes from these library releases. Lively and not too complex but balanced palate and texture. Great with the food.

Dec 30th, 2017CVed 11/8/17 JL HAUBS-Barzen Erben comp. Funky nose and darkened possibly degraded cork and prominent acetic acid notes but on palate it's drinking fine. Weird. Color a bit darker and yellowed than others. Will have to try another bottle.
Opened another bottle 2/18/18. Upper part of cork is darkened and with mold. Might have affected CV as previous? But this bottle is excellent with nose of straw, minerals, acids and hints of white fruit. Good texture and well balanced palate with good finish. Perfect for spicy bawan. Raising from 8.6 to 8.9.
