Wagner Family of Wines
Voyage 5 Red Schooner Malbec
Malbec from the Wagner family (aka done Caymus style). Dense and dark Ruby with wild plum, cherries and dark cocoa on the nose. On the palate it's extracted and powerful with ripe cherry, black currants, cranberries and espresso. The finish is chalky, almost grainy, with graphite and other early minerals.

Such a fun wine, particularly since we are not big on Malbec. It’s dark and forbidding. Decadent nose of blackcurrants and fig paste. Lithe on the palette. Good tannins with lively acidity, finishing sweet. The Wagners have their finger firmly on the mass consumers pulse. Great wine and background story.

So, I have been on the voyage from year 1, but have to admit, year 5 was my least favorite. It’s inky, dark, jammy, but.... nothing spectacular which makes me wonder if I have become a wine snob? Liked, not loved, would buy again, but only bc I am a promoter of Red Schooner. Try the maiden voyage or number 3. They are my fav.

This is a construction site, but we love it!

Beautiful and complex. Notes of sandalwood, vanilla, leather, coco nibs, ripe mushy raspberries, coffee grounds on the nose. Nice texture, balanced silky tannins, blackberry jam up front with solid black pepper on the finish. Rich, smooth, lengthy finish.

Apr 22nd, 2020Wow! So dark it almost looks like coffee. Bold and definitely worthy of a Friday night! I bought it on recommendation of my fave wine guy but I’m not convinced it’s better at $50 than any $25bottle
