Villa Guelpa
Sizzano Nebbiolo Vespolina
Such a great value. Youthful nose has beautifully pure ripe cherry (fresh and dried) along with lots of wafty crushed stony gravel scents and a lightly feral note of fur. In the mouth the cherry fruit is intense and accompanied by lots of high-toned stony mineral savoriness, but it is very light on its feet. Ends on a pleasantly and slightly bitter cherry note. Tannins are abundant but very soft. Acids are goods but not so much as to lean-out the fruit.

Sep 20th, 2023This is a very pretty wine. High-toned nose features rose petals, dried bright cherry, crushed rock dust, spice, mahogany. Lots of flavor in a light-footed package for a mostly Nebbiolo-based wine. Imagine a savory-side take on cherry, with nice transparency as northern Piemonte Nebs can show. Very nice acidity and a delicate framework of tannins. Fantastic value.

Jan 9th, 2023Light color. Nose is kind of shy, giving up tart cherry, spice, crushed rock, and bitter herb notes. In the mouth, it’s very lean and gives a pretty good whack of tannins. Some nice cherry fruit there, too, and some acid, but I’m not sure there’s enough stuffing to outlive the tannins.
UPDATE: I left this under a vacuum closure for two nights, and now it’s much better. It’s put on some weight and fruit. The tannins are less prominent as a result. Upping score from 8.7 to 8.9. When a wine is better on night 2 or (as here) night 3, that usually means it would benefit from several hours of decanting if drinking in the near term or, better yet, a few (or more) years in the cellar.

Lighter neb, cherries and violets, really enjoyable. Reminds me of some of the wines in the old days when they called it spanna. I really like the more northern Nebbiolo wines better than the regions further south

May 31st, 2024Now that’s a PLEASANT surprise.
Since it’s hot as F out, I was juggling, a white, rose, Beaujolais, something to cool for homemade gazpacho, sauscison, cheeses…
And what do ya know, @WTSO comes through. Smokey cherries, bit o’ tar, bramble. Delicious on the nose.
The palate echoes that w nice acids, a little grip, some earthiness.
Really nice Lessona effort.
Thanks@WTSO
