Villa Creek Cellars
Luna Matta Vineyard Aglianico
Popped and poured; enjoyed with brunch. The 2014 is finally open for business and only just. The wine pours a deep ruby/purple color with an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears and signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe black fruit: black berries, black plum, leather, licorice, some cocoa, earth and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. Boy, those tannins are still rippin’! Drink now through 2038. Only 50 cases made.

Feb 2nd, 2025Layers of fruit, spice and tannin. Quite remarkable. Intriguing dryness. Complex wine. Need to revisit. Only 200 cases made.

Apr 26th, 2019Tannic but layered at the same time. Intense aglianico from Mendocino I believe. Just intense and intriguing.

Jun 15th, 20152008. Really nice wine and drinking great right now, especially with an hour or two decant. I'd like more for sure.

Jun 28th, 2014Dinner in downtown Paso Robles and trying to mix up a day of Rhône-style indulgence. This Cal-Ital hits you in the nose with smoky blood orange, actual blood, herbs, and lavender. For an ‘11 and a Cali wine, I expected it to be softer. This has massive structure, beautiful acid and very grippy tannins wrapping a lengthy finish. Paired nicely to a braised short rib and also to my wife’s lamb ragu.

Oct 7th, 2018Wow! Great paso fruit with some sweet tannins. This is great but just a baby, the aglianico character comes in so well with fruit, tar, pepper, olive and you can't taste a hint of the 52 months this spent in barrel. Very unique.
