Tyrrell's Wines
Stevens Single Vineyard Hunter Shiraz
Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia

Earthy aromas with savoury red fruits. A good balance between acid and tannin. Oak is absorbed as you would hope at 14 years of age. Doesn’t scream Hunter Valley because of the ripeness of the fruit but that earth and spice leads you there. In hindsight I opened this too early contrary to my previous tasting note 5 years ago. This still has a solid core of potential which will enable the wine to last another 10 years where it will develop leathery notes.

Earthy aromas with cherry notes. On palate initially sweet then savoury. Medium bodied with Medium intensity. Lacked a little mid palate fruit with acid ascendant at the finish. Drink the remaining 2 in the next couple of years.

Notes of plum and cherry but with more than a hint of that Hunter earthiness that seems to have morphed out of the modern Hunter style of late, more's the pity. Where's the old Hunter sweaty saddle? It's a bit like southern Rhone CDP. A little bit of Brett not a bad thing IMO.

Bright medium ruby with medium wide violet pink rim . This is quite exuberantly fruited on the nose at first , with plum , dark cherry , violets then some dry spices, anis, with some slightly toasty , earthy hints after a while . On the palate this is velvety in texture , medium bodied with red plum , dark cherry , ripe blackberry , with a discreet dried spice note . Balanced alcohol , ripe but lightly grippy tannins , and good freshness . Medium length , with cherry , anis and toasty , earthy notes on the finish. Youthful but certainly enjoyable now and , I would imagine , over the next 5-10 years.

Aug 17th, 2025Loads of red berry fruits, along with the typical Hunter Shiraz earthy/leathery note. Medium body, soft tannins, very drinkable.
