Woodcutter's Barossa Valley Shiraz

$20 and this good? Get out-a-here! It was fantastic! Sure, maybe a touch less complex than the higher end Shiraz wines, but it was as if this wine is made from the declassified fruit in the RunRig, because it tasted so similar to it, just more youthful and less intense. Grilled meat, cherries, red plum, mocha, black pepper, bacon fat, dried lavender, and cedarwood. The pallet does have a slight jam factor, but only a touch. Dark in the glass - blackberry liquor, espresso roast, strawberry/rhubarb jam, smoldering charcoal, sauteed black peppercorn, and a medium intensity to the finish. I'm happy he did this last, because I didn't get overly excited for the expensive bunch, and the quality extended through out all the wines. Wouldn't mind having this one often.

May 11th, 2017As an overt Europhile, it's been way too long since I've enjoyed a Barossa Shiraz, and this one doesn't disappoint with its dark fruit nose and lush, silky, layered palate...note to self: must continue to reconnect with beguiling Barossa!

Warming up for our trip to the down under of the wine world. Torbreck is a stop along the way. Decent straight out of the screw top bottle. Now before you think screw tops equal bad or cheap wine, there are a few things to understand first. Screw tops have proven to be the superior storage. Maybe, too good in some cases in terms of aging. However, I'm with you that miss the pleasure of pulling out a cork. You have to know that Portugal is the source of much of the cork in the world. The boat travel time to Australia and NZ takes a very long time. So long, that if the corks are bad (TCA) replacements take just as long and can really hinder a wineries operation. They also start harvesting in March/April unlike most of the wine world. Generally not in synch with peak cork production. These issues made their decision easy in a number of cases to move away from cork. The 14 Woodcutter's is pleasant and classic in style. Ripe, rich, dark mixed wild berries, plums, dark cherries, blue fruits, pepper, grilled meats, violets, lavender, soft and easy dark minerals, dark rich soil, hints of anise, spice, herbs, nice acidity and beautiful, long, elegant rich fruit finish. A steal at Costco for $15.99.
