I’m not a big fan of Portuguese wines — nor Portuguese varietals — so, take this rating for what it’s worth. Frankly I think the 30% Syrah in the blend helps to tone this wine down a bit and smooth off its rough edges. Once this wine opens up — I.e. you need to give it an hour to unclench it’s angry little fist — it’s very drinkable. The Syrah creates a smooth tannic substrate against which all the jarring notes of Portuguese grapes play. This is a Charlie Bird Parker sort of wine. Lots of mineral high notes against slightly off-key low notes, But it will reward the adventurous palate with a fun up-and-down roller coaster ride.

Easy to drink. Starts off sweet with a bit of tart and bitter.

From the opening of the bottle & the immense aroma hugging the cork I became overwhelmed with excitement.

The initial hints lingering on the nose were oak, chocolate, dark berries & plums.

Visually, the glass is filled with dark red, black centered tones that shine like a newly discovered jewel.

Additional scents of vanilla & earthy spices massage the senses. The first tingling sensations of liquid touch the lips, tongue, the fleshy contours of the mouth are overtaken with a dry fruity essence that quickly morphs into an earth laden outpouring of heavy tannins, dark, slightly bitter fruits and leathery substances of ancient lands.

This wine is a journey that proposes questions and forces you to analyze your experience & pushes your senses to evolve with each sip.

35% Touriga Nacional; 25 % Tinta Roriz; 25% Syrah; 15 % Alicante Bouschet
