Sterling Vineyards
SVR Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Blend
1996 | Birthday weekend for my lovely wife.
Slight funk on the nose, but solid, dusty red fruits on the palate. Double decanted with notes at 5H. Complete notes on future bottles. 2006 acquisition with careful storage since.
Paired to USDA Prime Strip Steaks (baseball-cut), Allen Bros. Chicago.
I do enjoy the old, minimalist label showcasing the view of the winery in the hill.

On the nose and palate, this is beginning to fade. Still has a story to tell, tho. Maintains its fruit-forward style, but some tertiary notes of herbs and leather have come along for the ride. Nice texture and balance, but time to get after these, if you have em.

Dec 22nd, 2018Another old favorite of ours that represents excellent quality for the price.
Presents a complex, nuanced nose of vanillin, barrel toast, rich dark cherries, cedar and a hint of nutmeg.
Palette is focused and precise. Tannins are still quite aggressive, which bodes well for further cellaring. Acidity is still buoyant. Notes of cherries, blackberries and possibly thyme keep nudging the tastebuds. Purchased well south of $40, we always gravitate to this juice.

Apr 21st, 2014Too much wood/tannin upon first open. Fruit is lost. Let's hope it opens up and gets better.

Dec 29th, 2013Dark cherry and plum. Fooled me into thinking it is Merlot-based. The cab added structure.
