Aug 26th, 2024Delicious. From one of the few Riesling vineyards I imagine still remain in Napa. Beautiful nose feature ripe appley fruit and yeast-inflected crushed stone. Crisp apple fruit in the mouth, with crisp apple fruit balanced the energy of the minerality and ripe acidity. Dry in style. If I were served this blind I’d probably guess Alsace.

This is a delicious Riesling from Spring Mountain District in Napa Valley. Elegant and fruit forward with enough acidity to balance the fruits.
Rich and nicely balanced. Feels like a Mosel Riesling. Tangy and interesting.
Still young, and already drinking beautifully. Will continue to age nicely in the next 15+ years.
Good right out of the bottle, and better after 20 minutes of airtime. Better when not too cold.
I had a few vintages of this wine and it always delivers. This vintage is delicious.
Good by itself as a sipping wine or with food. Will pair nicely with spicy Asian food.

Stony minerality+++, lemon rind, yellow peach, green pineapple, elevated/high acidity, bone dry. Charlie Smith was proudly showing us the book Best White Wine On Earth written by Stuart Pigott where on page 193 it listed Smith-Madrone Riesling as the only Northern American Riesling among the best Rieslings from the world.
Visited the winery on Sep 3rd 2022 in the morning, greeted by the responsible vineyard guard dog 🐶 who turned into the happiest sloppy doggo during our tasting appointment. Charlie Smith just finished picking the estate Cab Sauv fruit that morning started at 6am. And we witnessed fruits coming in and the destemmer churning and read through reflectometer that the Brix sits at 24.5.
Charles Smith is a such a personality but that’s a story for another time :)

Although easy to drink, it is more of thinking wine. A good quality wine with lots to offer. The spicy finish makes it interesting.
Very expressive right out of the bottle, and calmed down after 30 minutes of airtime. Better when not too cold.
This 4 year old is drinking so fresh, and I love that. Would age nicely in the next 10 years. One of the better dry Rieslings that I had from California. Has the potential to be a 94+ point wine.
Good by itself or with food. I had it all by itself by the pool.
