A leaky cork is always a stomach tightening event, unless… the wine is a German Riesling. I can’t tell you how many seeping, spongy corks have given way to reveal fresh-as-a-daisy wines for me over the years. This number from Schloss Schönborn was a perfect example. It was still greenish gold with incredible honeysuckle and wet pavement aromas, crystalline flavors of Asian pear, mandarin orange and honeysuckle. Zippy acidity, moderate sweetness, just everything you want from this genre. Would be all but impossible to peg at 17 years old if tasted blind.

I believe this label is (was?) reserved for Schonborn’s best Spätlese of the vintage, and it came from the Pfaffenberg in Hattenheim. This 18 year old prince complemented coconut curry soup with shrimp.

Lovely balance between petrol and Asian pear and citrus fruit. Moderately sweet (7.5% alc) and rich with a crackling stony underbelly.

Mouth watering acidity perfectly balances the sweetness of this wine pushing those golden apple and honey flavors to the fore. Clean minerality on the finish. Chill the wine and then chill drinking it.

So delicious! Held up so nicely. Wonderfully balanced with great acidity and structure. Honey and floral. Very refreshing!

In a nice spot with a great mix of effervescent fruits, stones, flowers, acidity and the kiss of sweetness.

Still young but starting to change ever so slightly. Still prickly/effervescent. Hold

Super good, beautiful, limpid. Very slightly sweet-- in the sphere of rich, rather than saccharine

Drinking very young with lots of potential ahead. On the drier side of Spätlese. I would give this one a few more years.
