Ruffino
Riserva Ducale Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend
This 11 year old Sangiovese is still drinking nicely.
Showing red and black fruits with wood, earth, vegetables, spices, light oak and chocolate notes.
Showing nice complexity, but a little unbalanced.
I definitely like it better with age.
A blend of 80% Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
13.5% alcohol by volume.
89 points.
$30.

In 1877, Illario and Leopoldo Ruffino laid the foundations of their dream to make Italian wines from the heart of Tuscany. Medium Ruby with aromas of dark berry fruit and earthy spice. On the palate tart black cherry, blackberry and prune flavors with cinnamon, pepper and earthy cedar notes. Full-bodied, well balanced soft tannins on a smooth medium+ finish. Grab a bowl of pasta and enjoy the great value wine. Tasting Sample.

Aug 16th, 2019Continuing to work my way through wines I don’t drink a lot I could be tested on. I’m rather fond of this one and it’s an exemplary standard Chianti Classico: tart red fruit, tomato, something sanguine and a full yet well-knitted backbone of tannins and acid to ballast all. Images of pizza are now dancing in my head. Thank god this wine was easier to comprehend than The Shape of Water. Jut sat through my screener of that and have no idea what to make of it. With this wine I just know I should drink it. But also maybe make pizza.

Mar 4th, 2018At $26 I would pass, but at $9... An excellent Tuesday night quaffer. Tart cherry, rose petal, cedar, leather, and spice, with a lemony acidity that makes this food-friendly.

Jul 15th, 2017Clear dark ruby in the glass. Nose of black cherry and menthol tea. Medium plus acidity and palate clearing, medium plus tannins usher in the palate of strong black tea, tart cherry, and soft leather. Could keep until 2020 but with a good decant or run through the aerator it's drinking well now. Solid example of the appellation. Food is its friend of course.
