With the annual release of these coming this week I needed to try one of these for research purposes. A couple years in bottle now has definitely helped it settle in and a splash decant is recommended. This marries the classic Rivers Marie style with a darker fruit profile from the Rhys estate vineyard fruit. Definitely on the list to buy from the upcoming release.

Moderate reddish purple in the glass. Quite young and tightly knit at this point showing predominantly barrel notes with caramel and dusty cedar but with aeration also wild berries and hints of mint. The red toned fruit is prominent on the palate with surprisingly muscular tannins, balanced acidity, 14.2% alcohol, and good length. This is River-Marie’s first vintage sourced from Rhys’ estate Bearwallow vineyard in the “deep end” of Anderson Valley. The bottling shows promise but would undoubtedly benefit from time in the cellar to unwind. $68.

The bear wallow is my least favorite of the R-M Pinots. Very lean, without much fruit.

Awesome Pinot after a 2 hour decant. Will definitely be grabbing a bunch more next release.

Great with Atlantic salmon, grilled to perfection. Don’t know if Pacific salmon would have worked, didn’t have it. Let it be known.
