Reddish tawny and translucent. Thinner and brighter than the older Barolo next to it. Great C-R nose. Notes of granite stone, earth, black cherry, cranberry, a little bacon, blueberries and some old wood. Vibrant in the mouth. Still has young fruit impression, tannins are soft and acidity still gives some pucker. Great future ahead for bottles like this.

The epitome of old-school Côte-Rôtie, the 1998 Rostaing offers up an ever-evolving kaleidoscope of aromas: smokey bacon fat and animal notes at first, followed by sweet violets and steeped blackberries. It's quite lean on the palate, with ultra-fine, well integrated tannins—a mark of maturity—underpinned by high acidity and gamey-green notes of dill and green peppercorn, olives, and cold, compost-laden springtime soils.

In a really good place. Rustic nose, lovely layered structure with all the right notes. Rostaing is a genius
