Starting to show it’s age and it is glorious. Dry honeydew, long almond, a hint of hazelnut.

We have one more bottle and I can’t wait to see where this lands in a couple years.

Stewed apricot, almonds, beautiful - still years left in there. Family don't like labelling cruanza/reserva etc but stickering gives the game away now.

Love this funky oxidized white; white wine with this bottle age is a nice treat. I’ve had it from this producer only once before, in SF from K&L. It was also on the Schloss Schauenstein wine list. $95 at Redbird with DY.

Always a favourite. Is there another white wine like it?

We’ve tasted – and adore – several different wines from the family-run Bodegas López de Heredia. We can now add this one to the list!

It’s a 2012 Rioja Crianza made from the Viura grape (100%) hailing from organically-farmed estate vineyards in the La Rioja region of Rioja DOCa, Spain.

The “Crianza” designation means this white wine spent at least 6 months aging on oak, however, this wine far exceeds the minimum as it was aged for 4 years in oak barrels before release.

It’s absolutely delicious! It has a deep golden hue with rich, well-developed notes of dried apricot, peach cobbler, beeswax, dill, vanilla, caramel, and butterscotch. It is dry, has medium alcohol, and has medium acidity to balance the confectionary aromas and flavors.

It is intensely fragrant and complex, making it an excellent solo sipper. It could also pair with savory, grilled or roasted fish or a flavorful stew like seafood paella.

Bodegas R. López de Heredia, Viña Gravonia, Rioja Crianza (2012), 12.5% ABV.

N: Marzipan, Oranges, almonds, verging on sherry, petrol.
P: weirdly fresh as a daisy, bright, you can sense the long time in American oak, but it has no weight. All this from the “ lesser” vineyard of Gravonia.
A wine to think and drink.

My first time drinking a white wine from Lopez De Heredia and it’s unlike any wine I’ve ever had before. Very fragrant and a lot of different tastes coming to the forefront. Bruised apple, quince, beeswax and honey. Some almond, slight oxidation and salinity like a fino sherry. This is a big and unusual wine. Not something I would drink daily, but enjoyed it as much on a taste as on an intellectual level.

Almond and hay accents, apricot undertones, green apple on the second sip, balanced, medium body, smooth finish.

Utterly unique - thought provoking, challenging, complex, and delicious. The list of different aromas and flavors could go on and on. I love these white wines.
