Abbaye de Morgeot Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Chardonnay

First 10-point bottle I’ve had of the 2023 Abbaye de Morgeot, and just extraordinary. What is fascinating is how completely opposite it is from the 2024. They are perfect for entirely different reasons, yet equally perfect, which is exactly why a great domaine is great. This was emotional, beautiful and complete. It made mincemeat of two other extraordinary wines tonight. What a wine. What a night.

Yup.

Oh my god that nose. Melon, beeswax, floral, spice, going in and out of closed. Finding its focus. A fierce rocky minerality as well. But needs more air. Palate is just absurd. Unreal density but also plumpness. Super textured and like an icing on the cake and the most insane restrained richness and grip. Concentrated and so so deep. Unreal balance, purity and finish. Nose is heaven. Just so ethereal and not a hair out of place. Crazy inner mouth aromas. Perfect fruit capture. Unreal freshness and acidity and it leaves your mouth in a state of vinous arousal. Juicy and nimble. So engaging and the juiciness is just stunning and the standout characteristic for this wine. I swish so hard and there is no hair out of place. Palate is insane 24 hours later. Mineral blast, sick purity, iodine and saline. Sweet minerals.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 2023 Chassange-Montrachet 1er Cru “Abbaye de Morgeot” pours a pale straw color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with powerful notes of freshly struck match, green apple, star fruit, Meyer lemon, white flowers, gentle warm spices and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and mineral laden. Brilliant stuff with a long life ahead. Just, wow. Drink now through 2048.
