A Collection of great Australian Reds - Christmas break up of the Tennis Group. This was the wine I brought. I forgot to say all these wines were tasted blind. Only the owner of the wine knew the identity. This was a standout thanks to the vintage with a long life ahead of it. HH has a drinking window through to 2040. As well as the savoury liquorice accents like the 2007, this had plenty of red and black fruits. That was my 3rd of 6 - 3 to go. Next in a couple of years if I have the willpower.

A Collection of great Australian Reds - Christmas Break up of the Tennis Group. Always a consistent Cuvée in the Penfolds stable but let down a little by the so so 2007 vintage in the Barossa. More savoury than fruit driven with liquorice and dark chocolate.

Juicy velvety red and blue fruits. Somewhat jammy. A lot of oak. Hints of wild herbs. Eucalyptus. Full throttle. Medium+ acidity, medium+ tannins, high alcohol. I seem to have problems with such wines in blind tasting all the time…

Outstanding. Beautifully cellared pedigree red from an excellent vintage. Lovely mature red wine. 🍷🍷❤️❤️

Annual Boys Trip away - this time to Cairns. My contribution to the BYO Dinner at an Indian Restaurant. No formal notes but these are so long living even at 13 years, and first of 6, this is considered as young. Plums and herbs. One of my favourite Penfolds Cuvées because of its lack of new oak - 90% fruit driven. Excellent with a long future.

It had some expected aged notes but in good shape. Not sure if Shiraz it the variety to age. But.... what do I know?

BYO night at the restaurant
Good better than the Grange 98 brought from another table, but not even close to the reputation of the vintage or the producer

Most of the group picked this out blind, I suspected a Grange from an off year. Still rich and beasty, an old warhorse game enough for an Ozzy assault on the palate and nostrils. Dark red leather, earthy, voluptuous but perfectly knit. Seamless. Years to go.

Lovely red fruit aromas of currant. Some Liquorice savouriness. From the excellent 1998 vintage and drinking at its peak but will go on for another 5 years at least. Love the fact that St Henri sees no new oak and made more in the old school European way using large format Old Oak casks. I generally buy a half dozen each year.

Notes of mulberry - even without new oak it somehow has the Penfolds DNA of chocolate malt. Brambley savoury notes. Great to have a Penfolds red with no new oak just for a change. Still with a long future as with 90% of Penfolds Reds. Amazing to think that decades ago Penfolds released Grange and St. Henri at the same price.
