Aug 2nd, 2019Here’s a nice surprise. Found this on a restaurant wine list at $275 and thought it was a great opportunity to access the big one. Yes I know that 1993 is not regarded as a classic year but I can’t justify the $600 plus for ‘better’ vintages.
The bottle was in perfect condition and had been stored well with a full neck fill. On opening, the cork was in great condition and the aromas from the bottle were fantastic, pure Shiraz with heavy blackcurrant, diesel, tar, liquorice, menthol and a little raisin. Decanted twice to clear off the fine sediment and then let it rest.
Tried the wine after a few minutes and it was smooth but a little tight on the finish, hard to believe this is 24 years old. Two hours later and all of the flavours had come to life on the palate with great silkiness, a punch of fruit, vanilla, cigar, mint and caramel.
This is getting better and better as the afternoon goes on and it has been such a treat to try. Most reviews say it is almost at the end of its drinking window but I think there’s a few more left in this, it’s beautifully mature but feels strong and elegant, no signs of weakening.
Better start saving for the next one.
