After the Paul Hobbs Pinot the other night, decided to go with the Cab, Hyde Vineyard 2002. Excellent choice. Just cannot go wrong with any Hobbs wine. Just a shame he had to discontinue the Michael Black Merlot.

2002 by Paul Hobbs is unbeatable, maybe his best class of Cabernets, though in a few years I am sure 2007 will be a staunch competitor. Red and purple color, the nose is a little funky, but the palate is fantastic with bright red fruits like cherry and raspberry, a touch of dusty mocha, the palate is plenty young, easily another 5-7 years here. Bright acidity and silky tannins. Shows the Carneros cool climate in spades.

From back when I could still afford Hobbs' single vineyard designate cabs (prices have really gone up), this is drinking just beautifully right now. I know the Beckstoffer To-Kalon gets all the (well-deserved) accolades, but I've always felt his Hyde Vineyard wines are underrated. The cooler climate of Carneros comes through in the form of more earthiness, but Hobbs picks the grapes at just the right time to balance acidity while avoiding the dominating bell pepper notes one often gets from cool climate cabs. No need to decant this one: it was terrific from start to finish (not sure it has a lot more time, so if you have it I'd consider drinking with the next few years). Terrific wine from a great producer.

Wow. A beautiful wine. Well-integrated with a long finish. In the right place now.
