Paul Croses
Viré-Clessé Vieilles Vignes Chardonnay

Always at least very good, this ‘22 is an excellent rendition. Of the Maconnais AOCs, I gravitate toward Vire-Clesse because I find it has a purity of Chardonnay fruit that I find very attractive. This has it, with the nose showing gorgeous apple fruit with a slight peachy note, along with subtle stony minerality. I get more of a mineral stank from the Pouilly’s and Saint-Veran than from V-C. When it’s fruit I crave, I veer towards Vire. Fairly deeply flavored, there’s nice balance on the mouth, with pretty good, integrated acids for such a hot year, and subtle minerality. Great value.

Loads of chalky, earthy minerals mix with straw- inflected pear and apple fruit. Rich and deep, with very good acids for a Macon. Not super complex but doesn't cheat on character. Excellent value.

Great, minerally bright nose. Stones, fresh hay, pears and apples. Very intensely flavored, very minerally and pure. A tad more acid and this would be amazing. But as is it's very good.

Made to go with hasselback potatoes and it worked especially when potatoes got spritzed with lemon which is to say this is rich and mineral, tropical yet maritime. Is this Chardonnay an ocean? It contains multitudes. Not saying it’s my favorite just that it is interesting and complex and worthy of attention.

Lemon, lime, wet stone, white spring blossoms. A kiss of saline.

Nice balanced Chablis style wine. No oak. Great with potatoes with tuna and anchovies.

2014 Vintage. 13% Alcohol. Lovely minerality and lemon citrus with just enough acidity. 1 cup into tonight’s cheese fondue which was excellent.
