Niepoort (Vinhos) S.A.
Redoma Douro Red Blend
A modest Portuguese revelation- had snapped this Touriga blend up in an annual ‘ cost’ sale at my local wine store. With nearly five years of age has a lovely grip and medium bodied rose & tar palate, not unlike an Piedmont red. Does remind me of Nebbiolo, the elegant version. Well worth the 30$ or so odd, on sale.

Feb 11th, 2018The nose tells you immediately this wine is a dry blend with solid tannins. Complex balance of cherries and gooseberries on one hand, with dried fruit (rasins, prunes, apricot?) on the other. Very dry finish. Will go well with most food.

The nose is almost Port-like with deep perfumy notes of plums, sultana, roasted black cherry, expresso and liqueur and spice…leaning toward, cardamom and white pepper. Silky on entry, yet totally gutsy and dry, with a core of fruit wrapped in refined tannins and moderate acidity. Dried apricot on the finish.

The palate has tremendous balance, a good attack fans out over the mid-palate where the fruit and sweet tannins push forward extra layers of blackberries and black tea. Medium grain tannins add good structure and deftly frame the persistent finish. Hell of a wine!

Complex broody nose that comes off vinous with dark fruits, Spanish chorizo, cloves ask undertones of purples@flowers. Dark fruits come alive in the palate with a long finish of cloves and tobacco
