So, 25 years ago when I was on the staff at Imperial College, the refectory stocked something they called "Common Room Claret." Every year, they sent someone to Bordeaux to buy something in the barrel and bottle it under their own label. It was never meant to be a wine for the ages, just something decent that would pair with all kinds of foods, and that wouldn't outshine the company or the conversation. I sense a similar philosophy here, and a somewhat similar taste. The label doesn't say what the blend is, but it's close enough to claret. There's a lot of fairly jammy red berry fruit, with some dry stone and chalk minerality. There's mild oak and vanilla, and some tannins that don't linger. I enjoyed it with delivery pizza on a Friday night.
