Müller-Catoir
Gimmeldingen Kabinett Riesling
There are a few wines in the world that you can really never go wrong with. And by that I mean there are a few wine producers in the world whose every product is simply fantastic. For me, one of those is Müller-Catoir from Germany’s Pfalz region. Founded in 1744 this regal family estate makes fantastic wines across a wide range of prices from their roughly 60 acres of estate vineyards. This is a perfect examples, with its electric acidity and minerality encased in Asian pear, mandarin orange oil, and honeysuckle brightness. With just a whisper of sweetness it goes down so easy you blink and half the bottle is gone. Ding!

2013. Stone fruit and citrus. But the compelling part is the wonderful balance. Like a heavy set tightrope walker. Tremendous and rich and elegant.

Jan 18th, 2016Excellent aromas of petrol, apricot, slate, flint, asphalt, and honeyed pears. Very addictive. Just a tiny bit spritzy.

Feb 8th, 2018SUCH tasty, concentrated, unctuous Riesling. Wow. Love these rich Pfalz 2013s. Quite rich for a Kabinett but not whatsoever cloying or lacking freshness. A noticeable botrytis influence. Pours a medium intensity slightly burnished gold hue. Explosively aromatic nose of ripe white peach, ripe mango, orange marmalade and honey, cardamom, lychee, wet stone, and the tiniest bit of TDN petrol character. The palate is equally concentrated and shows the same rich, ripe honeyed fruit, marmalade, cardamom, and wet stone. High acidity that is balanced by a decent amount of RS, firmly off-dry and a bit on the sweeter side as far as Kabinetts go. Medium (-)/medium body wth great glycerine texture from RS , botrytis, and I think probably some lees influence as well. Alcohol is low/medium (-) and not noticeable at all. One of those great wines that are simultaneously intellectual and just so ridiculously, deliciously gulp-able.
