Altos Ibericos Rioja Reserva 2018
Solid Rioja Reserva at a fair price. Bought in Spain this summer when we spent a few hours in the Val d'Aran during our stay in France. Brought back in the trunk of the car. This is widely distributed and I have seen it around here too. Opened yesterday evening, tasted on 2 days.
The nose is oaky, shows tar, blackberry, bramble, a bit of green bell pepper, a bit of smoke, some hints of meat juice, some mushroomy scents, too. It's quite complex. The palate is showing a good acid drive which makes the wine easy to sip on despite the oak. Nice blackberry notes play all along the acid backbone, some umami, savoury touches compliment them. The palate is rather broad but not muscular, there is a bit of matter but it's not chewy. Tannins are well integrated and restraint now. They only leave an ever so slightly drying layer over a long savoury, blackberry forward finish that goes on for a while and ends with oak making a comeback. It's not the greatest example of its kind but it's very well made, without apparent default or balance issue. Great value !
