Pommard Rugiens 1er Cru Pinot Noir

OMG nose. Great terroir cannot be fucked with. It cannot. Black opulent cherries, hint of sweet wood, floral, dark, brooding. This is the EMO vineyard of Pommard. Insane and intense minerality. What mineral lift. Stunning nose. 9.7? 9.8? I don’t know. But it’s up there. Elite. Elite. Concentrated and intense but oh so young. Faboosh complexity and juiciness. Fruit is extraordinary but also needs air to show its true self. Man what a stoney Rugiens. Nose now showing kirsch. But a black kirsch. Energetic and so delineated and what insane fruit and finesse. Super complex and light as a feather but also deep, contemplative and dense. Wow. Stunning. A tick below 19.

Been a bit over a year. Nose has gorgeous blackberry and wonderful stoniness and also black cherry. Very perfumed, very vivid and very defined aromas. The nobility of Rugiens comes through. Wow the blackberry is so pure and sappy. Palate needs some time to get it together but it is all there and the balance and finesse are elite. Ripe, juicy and substantial tannins that will flesh out and succumb to fruit within an hour or three as that intense blackberry really shows vividly on the finish. Really persistent. Fantastic.

After 3 hours the nose becomes dizzying in its expansiveness and intensity but the palate is only slowly opening. Think this will better tomorrow.

Ok, at 7 hours in this is getting great. That complete seductive texture is there now along with more density of fruit.

The top wine at Rebourgeon and this may be the best wine he’s ever made. Stunningly, deep, fresh, complex nose of cherry flower, spice cake, pulverized stones, licorice, mid to late season cherry and spice. Unreal complexity. But this 9.6 nose is still holding back. That’s what elite vineyards do. The nose is so harmonious. Wow, that is super elite. Just so elegant. One of the most elegant wines I’ve ever had from William if not the most elegant. This is only giving 15% of itself but that 15% is stunning. A sphere on the palate. So balanced, so much synergy. Stoney, floral, fruity and endless depth. Going deep in the ocean. You can sniff this nose as hard as possible and it still gives off unlimited depth. Outrageous nose. 9.7 ish. Palate is also a 9.7 but has so much room to improve. Unreal sweet fruit and wonderful slippery character. Tannins, acid and fruit all in perfect harmony. Just a stunning bottle of Rugiens and the best bottle of wine young William has made so far.

Oh so wonderful and so so classic. Stony nose. Like mega stones. Gorgeous mid season cherry. Hint of licorice. Lipstick like intensity. Haunting, ethereal. So good. Palate has just amazing fruit but needs 2 hours to get there. Unreal fruit soak, so fresh, such lift, velvety and sweet tannins. Terrific persistence and complexity. Needs a decade to get really Rugiens but so so fine.

Superb nose of deep stoniness that only Rugiens can bring. Floral, woodsy and spicey as well. Black cherry pastille. Complex. Unfurling. Black cherry. End of season cherries. Gorgeous purity of fruit on the palate and wonderful finesse and freshness. Very elegant. Chewy and dense but really light on its feet. Awesome fruit stamp on the palate. Sticks with you. Terrific concentration and power and sweet, ripe and stoney tannins. Superb depth. Sappy and so serious. Elite Rugiens. 25 year wine here. Terrific finish and picks up complexity as it airs. Needs a few hours, days, years, decades to unwind. Will be a great trip.
