Michel & Stéphane Ogier (d'Ampuis)
La Combe de Malleval Condrieu Viognier
Condrieu, Northern Rhône, Rhône, France

Apricot City! Nice to compare this with Australia’s top version of Viognier, the Yalumba “Virgilius” which we had yesterday and I preferred - definitely better value for money. Richard Hemming MW thought the Stephane Ogier was light for a Condrieu. 100% Viognier, 33% new oak.

Pale to mid Gold in colour. Obvious aromas of apricot also the white flowers of citrus trees, and slivered almonds. Lovely garden aromas of sweet pea. On the palate an unctuous texture of apricot and peach. A full bodied white with low acid but medium plus intensity. Enough acid to not be cloying. I have found it best to drink Condrieu on the young side - not over 7 years. No other word for it but Delicious.

Last Sunday was a Rhone day starting with this Condrieu from Ogier. Mid Lemon in colour with brassy notes. Unfortunately a touch of TCA (cork taint wet cardboard) amongst the apricot , pear and honey characters. Technically it was there but for me the palate was more than acceptable and I would probably not have insisted on a replacement in a restaurant but many would and that is their right. Next day - definitely corked. Hopefully my other bottle is not affected.

Outstanding example - yellow apple, pear, pineapple and tropical aromas. Slight cream.

Weighty texture countered with uplifting acid, exotic fruit, minerality and powerful flowers.

A lovely Condrieu - full-bodied without being cloying, dry with subtle minerality. Perhaps a bit low in acidity but still very appealing

Really delicious. Big, elegant, med acid, moderated oak, low phenolic bitterness.
